Mumbai: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking, has achieved another milestone in indigenous shipbuilding with the formal handing over of ICGS Ajit (Yard 1277), a state-of-the-art Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), to the Indian Coast Guard.
The handing-over ceremony was preceded by the First Reading Ceremony and attended by senior officials from GSL and the Indian Coast Guard. The induction of ICGS Ajit is expected to strengthen India’s coastal and offshore security capabilities while advancing the country’s defence self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The formal delivery marks an important achievement for GSL in developing and delivering advanced vessels for India’s maritime security forces.
ICGS Ajit Built With Over 65% Indigenous Content
The 51.43-metre-long and 8-metre-wide Fast Patrol Vessel has been built with more than 65% indigenous content, highlighting the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence shipbuilding industry.
The vessel has a displacement of 330 tonnes at a draught of 2.5 metres and incorporates advanced propulsion and machinery systems.

Advanced Propulsion System Enhances Performance
ICGS Ajit is powered by twin marine diesel engines driving controllable pitch propellers (CPP).
According to GSL, the use of controllable pitch propellers is a first-of-its-kind feature in this class of Fast Patrol Vessels. The system is designed to provide improved propulsion efficiency and operational performance.
The vessel is also equipped with an advanced integrated machinery control system, which is aimed at enhancing operational readiness, efficiency and sustainability.
ICGS Ajit to Strengthen Coastal and Offshore Security
The new Fast Patrol Vessel has been designed to undertake a range of maritime security and law-enforcement missions.
Its key operational roles include:
- Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance
- Coastal patrolling
- Fisheries protection
- Anti-smuggling operations
- Anti-piracy missions
- Search and rescue operations
With a crew complement of six officers and 35 sailors, ICGS Ajit will add another capable platform to the Indian Coast Guard’s fleet for safeguarding India’s coastal and offshore areas.

The successful delivery of ICGS Ajit reflects the increasing capabilities of Indian shipyards to design, construct and deliver technologically advanced platforms for the country’s defence and maritime security forces.
With more than 65% indigenous content, the vessel also supports the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India by promoting domestic manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported technologies.
