Mumbai: Goa Shipyard Limited has delivered ICGS Akshay (Yard 1273), the fifth Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) in an eight-vessel series built for the Indian Coast Guard. The handover marks another milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

The vessel has been officially inducted into service to enhance India’s maritime surveillance and coastal security capabilities.

Indigenous Fast Patrol Vessel Built for Multi-Mission Operations

ICGS Akshay is an indigenously designed and constructed Fast Patrol Vessel equipped with advanced systems to support a wide range of maritime security roles.

Key features include:

  • Advanced Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) propulsion system
  • High-end onboard operational technologies
  • More than 65% indigenous content

Strengthening India’s Maritime Security Capabilities

The newly inducted FPV will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests across its vast coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Its key operational roles include:

  • EEZ surveillance and patrol
  • Anti-smuggling operations
  • Anti-piracy missions
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) operations
  • Coastal interception and security duties

Officials said the vessel will significantly enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s rapid response capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.

Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat and Defence Manufacturing

The delivery of ICGS Akshay highlights India’s growing self-reliance in defence production. The vessel’s high indigenous content reflects the expanding capabilities of domestic shipbuilding and defence engineering industries.

The project aligns with national initiatives aimed at reducing dependency on imports and strengthening India’s strategic defence infrastructure.

Part of a Larger Fleet Modernisation Programme

ICGS Akshay is part of a broader programme to modernise the Indian Coast Guard fleet with advanced and mission-ready vessels. The remaining FPVs in the series are also being built to further enhance coastal defence preparedness and maritime domain awareness.
