New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on Wednesday announced the development of a state-of-the-art ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat in partnership with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA). The project, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), involves a total investment of ₹1,570 crore.

Major Investment Split Between CSL and DPA

The project will be implemented under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The investment structure includes:

  • Deendayal Port Authority (DPA): ₹650 crore for civil infrastructure including jetties
  • Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL): ₹920 crore for ship repair infrastructure and operations

CSL will also operate the facility after completion.

Advanced Ship Repair Infrastructure at Vadinar

The upcoming brownfield facility will include modern maritime infrastructure such as:

  • 650-metre jetty
  • Two large floating dry docks
  • Ship repair workshops
  • Supporting marine infrastructure

The project is expected to be completed within 36 months.

Capability to Service Large Vessels

The Vadinar shipyard will significantly boost India’s ship repair capacity by enabling servicing of vessels up to 300 metres in length. This addresses a major gap in domestic infrastructure, which currently supports vessels only up to around 230 metres.

Strategic Location to Boost Maritime Trade

Located near major ports like Mundra and Kandla, the facility is expected to:

  • Attract large commercial and foreign-flagged vessels
  • Improve vessel turnaround time
  • Enhance competitiveness of Indian ports
  • Strengthen India’s maritime logistics ecosystem

Employment and Economic Impact

The project is expected to generate:

  • Around 290 direct jobs
  • Nearly 1,100 indirect employment opportunities

It will also support MSMEs and allied maritime service industries in the region.

Boost to Maritime India Vision

CSL stated that the project will help:

  • Reduce dependence on foreign shipyards
  • Lower foreign exchange outflow
  • Strengthen India’s ship repair ecosystem

It aligns with the goals of Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
