Patna: Bihar has strengthened critical healthcare infrastructure in Muzaffarpur with the inauguration of an advanced ICU complex at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre and a 30-bed Special Critical Care Unit at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH).
Health Minister Nishant inaugurated both facilities during his one-day visit to Muzaffarpur on Thursday. The new infrastructure is expected to improve access to advanced critical care for cancer patients and seriously ill people from Muzaffarpur and other districts of North Bihar.
New ICU Complex at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital
An advanced ICU complex has been established at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC), Muzaffarpur, a Tata Memorial Centre unit under the Department of Atomic Energy. The facility will strengthen critical care for cancer patients with serious and complex conditions and reduce the need to travel outside Bihar.
During his visit, Minister Nishant reviewed cancer treatment, patient care, medicines and expansion plans. Hospital Director Dr Kumar Prabhash briefed him on the centre’s progress, achievements and growing demand for cancer services in North Bihar.

Government Pushes for Cancer Care Closer to Home
Health Minister Nishant said Bihar is strengthening cancer treatment facilities across the state. With support from Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, Muzaffarpur is being developed as a key centre for advanced cancer care, helping North Bihar patients access modern treatment closer to home.
The state government will support HBCH&RC in expanding treatment capacity, resources and medical facilities, reducing the financial and logistical burden of travelling to other states.
SKMCH Gets 30-Bed Critical Care Unit
At SKMCH, the Health Minister inaugurated a new 30-bed Special Critical Care Unit.
The facility will provide timely and advanced treatment to critically ill patients and strengthen the hospital’s capacity to manage serious medical cases.
Its benefits are expected to extend beyond Muzaffarpur, with patients from several districts of North Bihar also accessing critical care services at the hospital.
The minister inspected the healthcare facilities at SKMCH and reviewed treatment arrangements, available resources and patient services with hospital administrators and medical teams.
Muzaffarpur Strengthens Its Cancer Care Network
Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Muzaffarpur, was established in 2018 and is a unit of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the centre on August 22, 2025.
The hospital provides several diagnostic and treatment services, including:
- Mammography and CT scan
- Digital X-ray and simulator scan
- Radiation therapy and chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy and brachytherapy
The institution serves patients from North Bihar and surrounding areas, making its expansion significant for regional cancer care.
Growing Patient Demand Drives Expansion
Dr Kumar Prabhash said the hospital aims to provide advanced cancer treatment closer to patients’ homes, reducing the need to travel to cities like Mumbai. Rising patient numbers have prompted expansion of treatment capacity and medical infrastructure.
The new ICU and critical care unit at SKMCH further strengthen Muzaffarpur’s healthcare capacity and its role as a key medical centre for North Bihar, supporting Bihar’s efforts to improve access to specialised care.
