BEML, UMPESL Partner to Boost Productivity of India’s Mining Fleets

BEML and UMPESL have signed an MoU to pursue fleet management contracts across India’s coalfields, combining OEM expertise, field services and data-driven monitoring.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Bengaluru: BEML Limited has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited (UMPESL) to jointly pursue productivity-driven Fleet Management Contracts (FMC) across India’s coalfields.

The partnership brings together BEML’s original equipment manufacturer (OEM) expertise in heavy mining equipment with UMPESL’s capabilities in field service, maintenance and fleet management. The collaboration is expected to strengthen equipment availability, improve operational efficiency and support safer and more productive mining operations.

Partnership Targets Coal India Operations

The two companies will focus on comprehensive operation and maintenance (O&M) projects, particularly for Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries.

The partnership will cover BEML’s mining equipment range, including:

  • Bull Dozers
  • Excavators
  • Loaders
  • Dumpers
  • Surface Miners

Engineering analytics and performance monitoring will form an important part of the proposed model. The companies aim to use equipment performance data to improve availability, optimise lifecycle costs and increase overall fleet productivity.

BEML to Lead as Principal Bidder

Under the proposed operating model, BEML will act as the principal bidder and provide equipment, genuine spare parts, OEM-level technical support and training.

UMPESL, meanwhile, will lead site-level operations. Its responsibilities will include deploying skilled manpower, mobile service infrastructure and tools, along with performance monitoring capabilities.

The model is also designed to support safety practices compliant with the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS).

This division of responsibilities is intended to combine BEML’s product and engineering capabilities with UMPESL’s on-ground service network, creating an integrated approach to mining fleet operations.

Focus on Uptime, Safety and Lifecycle Costs

The partnership is aimed at moving beyond equipment supply towards lifecycle-focused fleet management. By combining maintenance expertise with engineering analytics and continuous performance monitoring, the companies intend to identify operational issues and improve equipment uptime.

Higher availability of mining machinery can help mining operators reduce equipment downtime and make better use of existing fleets. At the same time, a stronger maintenance framework can help manage lifecycle costs and improve reliability over the operational life of the equipment.

The approach could be particularly relevant to large-scale coal mining operations where heavy equipment plays a central role in excavation, material handling and overburden removal.

BEML Brings Six Decades of Manufacturing Experience

BEML Limited is a leading multi-technology Schedule A company under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The company serves key sectors including Defence, Rail, Mining and Construction.

With a legacy spanning six decades, BEML operates through three major verticals — Defence & Aerospace, Mining & Construction, and Rail & Metro.

Its manufacturing facilities are located in Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Mysore and Palakkad. The company also has an established research and development infrastructure and a nationwide sales and service network.

Its Mining & Construction portfolio includes earthmoving, transportation and construction equipment, making its OEM capabilities central to the new partnership.

UMPESL Adds Field-Service Expertise

UMPESL is a 100% wholly owned subsidiary of Voltas Limited, a Tata Enterprise. Its role in the partnership will focus largely on field operations, maintenance and fleet management.

By combining these capabilities, the two companies intend to offer mining operators a more integrated service model rather than treating equipment supply and maintenance as separate activities.

The companies expect this approach to support reliable fleet performance while improving operational monitoring at mining sites.

Partnership Signals Shift Towards Integrated Mining Solutions

The MoU was signed at BEML Headquarters in Bengaluru by Sandeep Manohar Matey, Chief General Manager and Head – SBU (Sustenance), BEML Ltd, and Sharad Thussu, Vice President – Mining & Construction Division, UMPESL.

The signing took place in the presence of Sanjay Som, Director (Mining & Construction), BEML, Sachin Dighde, Director (Defence), BEML, and senior officials from both companies.

BEML’s Shantanu Roy said the partnership combines the company’s OEM and engineering strengths with UMPESL’s field-service expertise to deliver integrated, performance-driven fleet solutions. He highlighted the aim of achieving higher equipment uptime, safer operations and greater productivity across India’s mining sector.

The collaboration represents a broader shift towards lifecycle-focused mining solutions, where equipment, maintenance, technical support and performance data work together.

For India’s large mining operations, such integrated fleet management models could help improve reliability, reduce downtime and make heavy equipment more productive over its operating life.
