Patna: Bihar intensified its enforcement drive against illegal liquor in August, with more than 1.12 lakh raids conducted across the state. The joint operation by the Prohibition, Excise and Registration Department and Bihar Police resulted in around 10,000 cases and more than 11,000 arrests.

The action covered liquor consumption as well as its illegal manufacture, sale, storage and transportation.

More Than 11,000 People Arrested

According to departmental data, over 8,100 cases among those arrested were related to liquor consumption. Around 3,200 cases involved the manufacture, sale, storage or smuggling of liquor.

The scale of the operation reflects the state government’s continued focus on enforcing Bihar’s prohibition policy and targeting both consumers and illegal liquor networks.

Saran and Patna Lead Enforcement Action

Saran recorded the highest number of raids, with 6,401 operations during August. Patna Sadar followed closely with 6,333 raids and recorded the highest liquor seizure.

Gopalganj, East Champaran, Araria, Gaya, Sitamarhi and Nawada were among the other districts where enforcement teams carried out extensive operations.

Over 7 Lakh Litres of Liquor Seized

The August crackdown also resulted in the seizure of more than 7.10 lakh litres of liquor. This included 5.64 lakh litres of country-made liquor, 1.44 lakh litres of foreign liquor and 1,624 litres of spirit.

Authorities also seized around 49.78 lakh kilograms of Jawa Mahua, a key material used in the illegal production of liquor.

These seizures indicate that enforcement efforts targeted not only finished liquor but also materials and networks involved in its illegal production.

1,010 Vehicles Used in Smuggling Seized

Enforcement teams also seized 1,010 vehicles allegedly used for liquor smuggling. The vehicles included 740 two-wheelers, 71 three-wheelers, 171 four-wheelers and 28 trucks.

The action is aimed at disrupting the transportation network that supports the illegal liquor trade across Bihar.

Continuous Monitoring to Continue

The department said enforcement will continue through regular raids, prompt action on complaints and continuous monitoring. The focus remains on preventing the manufacture, sale, transportation and storage of illegal liquor.

The August figures underline the scale of Bihar’s ongoing prohibition enforcement campaign and the government’s effort to curb illegal liquor networks through coordinated action by the excise department and police.
