Patna: Bihar’s eco-tourism destinations are gaining popularity, with visitor numbers rising from 55.20 lakh in 2022-23 to 74.90 lakh in 2024-25. The state recorded an increase of more than 20 lakh visitors in two years as nature, wildlife and adventure-based destinations attract more tourists.

Rajgir Nature Safari Nearly Doubles Footfall

Rajgir Nature Safari has emerged as a major attraction. Visitor numbers rose from around 1.59 lakh in 2022-23 to nearly 3 lakh in 2024-25.

The destination combines natural surroundings with attractions such as the glass skywalk, zipline, sky cycling and suspension bridge. Archery, rifle shooting, trampoline and wall climbing have also increased its appeal among families and young visitors.

Karamchat Dam Sees Three-Fold Rise

Karamchat Dam in Kaimur recorded 46,163 visitors in 2022-23, increasing to 1,49,832 in 2024-25.

Its reservoir, hills and greenery have helped establish the site as an emerging eco-tourism destination.

Bhimbandh and Other Sites Gain Visitors

Bhimbandh Eco-Tourism Centre in Munger also saw strong growth, with visitors increasing from 35,093 to 85,868 during the two-year period.

Mandar Hill in Banka recorded a rise from around 80,000 to 98,000 visitors, while Nagi-Nakti Bird Sanctuary in Jamui saw footfall increase from 30,797 to 48,068.

276 Eco-Tourism Projects Planned

The state is also looking to expand eco-tourism through private investment. The Tourism Department identified 276 projects under the PPP and DBFOT models following the Eco-Tourism Investors Meet 2026.

The projects include 29 reservoir-based sites and 247 projects involving ponds, lakes, wetlands and other water bodies. Selected developers will receive sites on a 30-year lease, along with planned government support through time-bound approvals, Viability Gap Funding and incentives under the Bihar Tourism Policy.

Focus on Nature and Local Economy

Bihar’s eco-tourism strategy aims to combine tourism with conservation while creating employment opportunities in local communities. Valmiki Tiger Reserve, Bhimbandh, Kakolat Waterfall, Kaimur forests, Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagi-Nakti, Udaypur forest area and Mandar Hill are among the destinations strengthening the state’s eco-tourism circuit.

The rising footfall and planned projects signal a broader shift in Bihar’s tourism sector, with greater emphasis on natural landscapes, adventure experiences, conservation and local economic opportunities.
