Patna: In a major push to strengthen air connectivity and regional development, the Bihar cabinet led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has approved the construction of two new greenfield airports in Sonpur (Saran district) and Ajgaibinath Dham (Sultanganj, Bhagalpur district). The decision is expected to significantly enhance tourism, business activity, and employment opportunities across the state.

RITES Ltd Assigned to Prepare DPR and Master Plan

The state government has entrusted M/s RITES Ltd with the responsibility of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and master plan for both airport projects.

The consultancy firm will also assist in:

  • Obtaining in-principle approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation
  • Supporting the tendering process
  • Providing technical consultancy for project execution

Sonpur Airport to Ease Pressure on Patna Airport

The proposed Sonpur greenfield airport in Saran district is expected to play a key role in reducing operational pressure on the existing Patna Airport.

Currently, Bihar has only four operational airports:

  • Patna
  • Gaya
  • Darbhanga
  • Purnia

With increasing passenger traffic, the new airport is expected to improve travel convenience and connectivity for central Bihar.

Ajgaibinath Dham Airport to Boost Eastern Bihar Development

The second airport at Ajgaibinath Dham in Bhagalpur district is expected to transform the development landscape of eastern Bihar.

The project aims to:

  • Improve air connectivity in eastern regions
  • Promote religious and cultural tourism
  • Strengthen local economic activity

Officials believe the airport will act as a catalyst for balanced regional growth.

Boost to Tourism, Business, and Employment Opportunities

Both greenfield airports are expected to generate significant economic benefits for Bihar. Key expected outcomes include:

  • Growth in tourism across Sonpur and Ajgaibinath Dham regions
  • Expansion of trade and business activities
  • Creation of new employment opportunities
  • Increased investment in surrounding areas

The government believes improved air connectivity will attract private sector participation and infrastructure development.

Strengthening Bihar’s Aviation Infrastructure

The approval of these two airports is part of a broader strategy to modernize Bihar’s infrastructure and improve national and international connectivity.

Officials said the initiative will help:

  • Improve passenger movement efficiency
  • Support regional aviation expansion
  • Enhance Bihar’s connectivity with major cities

The state government emphasized that better air infrastructure is essential for long-term economic growth.

Regional Development and Economic Growth Push

The Bihar cabinet’s decision is being seen as a major step toward balanced regional development. By improving connectivity in both central and eastern Bihar, the government aims to reduce regional disparities and promote inclusive growth.

The projects are also expected to:

  • Strengthen the state economy
  • Increase tourism revenue
  • Encourage industrial development

Major Step Towards Modern Infrastructure in Bihar

With the approval of greenfield airports in Sonpur and Ajgaibinath Dham, Bihar has taken a significant step toward expanding its aviation network and strengthening infrastructure.

Once completed, the projects are expected to improve air connectivity, generate employment, and accelerate economic development, positioning Bihar for stronger regional and global integration.
