Patna: Bihar may soon see relief from sand shortages as the state government steps up efforts to increase sand mining and improve supply. The state’s Mines and Geology Department has identified six districts for exploring sand mining from new ghats and is also preparing to auction 452 sand ghats that are yet to be allotted.
The initiative aims to ensure an adequate supply of sand for construction activities across Bihar, including projects undertaken by government departments and private individuals. The department is working to speed up the process of allotting sand ghats that have remained unactioned for various reasons.
Bihar Identifies 6 Districts for New Sand Mining
According to information from the Mines and Geology Department, six districts have been selected for exploring new sand mining locations. These districts are:
- Gaya
- Arwal
- Jamui
- Patna
- Bhojpur
- Aurangabad
The department is examining potential new sand ghats in these districts to expand mining activities and improve the availability of sand in the state.
Alongside identifying new locations, the department is also focusing on the settlement and auction of previously identified sand ghats that have not yet been allotted. Efforts are being made to complete the process at the earliest.

Bihar Government Plans Auction of 452 Sand Ghats
The state government is also working to accelerate the auction of sand ghats that remain unallotted. According to the available information, Bihar has identified 541 white-sand ghats and 466 yellow-sand ghats.
Of these, 452 sand ghats are still awaiting auction. District Magistrates (DMs) have been directed to speed up the settlement process to ensure that these ghats can become operational.
The government expects that bringing more sand ghats into operation will expand the area available for sand mining and increase the overall supply of sand.
Why Bihar Is Focusing on Sand Mining
Construction activities are underway across several districts of Bihar, creating a demand for a consistent supply of sand. Any shortage can delay construction projects and increase difficulties for both private builders and government departments.
The Mines and Geology Department is therefore focusing on two key measures:
- Identifying new mining locations: Exploring new sand ghats in six districts to expand mining activities.
- Speeding up auctions: Completing the allotment process for the 452 sand ghats that remain unauctioned.
- Increasing sand availability: Bringing more operational ghats into the mining network to improve supply.
- Preventing construction delays: Ensuring that construction projects can continue without interruptions caused by sand shortages.
Sand Supply Expected to Improve as More Ghats Become Operational
The Bihar government’s plan to identify new sand mining locations and expedite the auction of existing ghats is aimed at addressing supply-related challenges. If the identified ghats become operational and the pending auctions are completed, the state could see an increase in sand availability for construction activities.
The Mines and Geology Department is prioritising the process to help meet demand and support the timely completion of construction projects across Bihar.
