New Delhi: In one of the most significant administrative exercises of the year, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, issued a sweeping transfer and posting order in the ranks of Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Pr. CIT) and Principal Director of Income Tax (Pr. DIT).

The comprehensive order covers promotions, inter-regional transfers, retention cases, deputation continuations, and extensive additional charge arrangements involving a large number of senior officers across India. The reshuffle is aimed at strengthening leadership across the Income Tax Department and ensuring seamless functioning of assessment, investigation, audit, judicial, and verification units nationwide.

Major Promotions in Principal CIT and Principal DIT Grades

The CBDT promoted several officers to key positions in both field and headquarters formations.

  • Rajesh Gupta has been promoted as Principal Additional Director General (O&M Services), CBDT, Delhi.
  • Vilas V. Shinde has been promoted as Principal Director of Income Tax (Investigation), Nagpur.
  • D. Komali Krishna has been promoted as PCIT-8, Chennai.
  • Aarsi Prasad has been promoted as PCIT-3, Bengaluru.
  • P.V. Pradeep Kumar has been promoted as PCIT (AU)-2, Hyderabad.
  • Hemantkumar Chimanlal Leluva has been promoted as PCIT(C), Panaji.
  • Shekhar L. Gajbhiye has been promoted as PCIT(VU)-1, Nashik.

  • Abhinay Shivaji Kumbhar has been promoted as PCIT-8, Mumbai.

  • K. Meghanath Chowhan has been promoted as PCIT(AU)-1, Dibrugarh.
  • Mudavathu N. Murthy Naik has been promoted as PCIT, Kozhikode.

Officers Continuing on Deputation or Leave

Several officers will continue on deputation, with their cases to be reviewed during AGT-2027. These include:

Rajnish Dev Burman, Ashim Kumar Modi, Pradeep Kumar Meel, Vanita Rattan Sharma, Anurag Goyal, Rajat Subhra Biswas, Manoj Kumar, Archana Sharma Awasthi, Ansuman Pattnaik, Bhaskar Goswami, Madhukar Kumar Bhagat, Garima Bhagat, Abha Rani Singh, T. Roumuan Paite, Rashmita Jha, Pankaj Jindal, Sandeep Raj, Ekta Vishnoi, Chittaranjan Dash, Meera Srivastava, Sanjog Kapoor and several others.

Neelam Shukla, who is currently on leave, will have her case reviewed upon return in AGT-2027.

Retention and MTL/RL Cases

In the MTL/RL category, a number of officers were retained in their current posts, while others were reassigned.

  • Garima Jain posted as PCIT-12, Delhi.

To ensure uninterrupted functioning, CBDT assigned additional charges to numerous officers across assessment, verification, review and appeals units.

  • Praveena S. given additional charge of PCIT(AU)-4 and PCIT(VU)-1, Hyderabad.
  • P.V. Pradeep Kumar assigned PCIT(RU)-1, Hyderabad.
  • Salil Mishra given additional charge of PCIT(AU)-1, Bhagalpur and PCIT, Ranchi.
  • Swati Joshi assigned PCIT(AU)-3 and PCIT(AU)-5, Ahmedabad.
  • Dr. Sunil Gautam assigned PCIT-1, Rajkot.
  • Susan Dolores George assigned PCIT(AU)-2 and PCIT(AU)-3, Bengaluru.
  • Manish Sareen assigned PCIT(AU)-2 and PCIT(AU)-9, Mumbai.
  • Vinay Sinha assigned PCIT(AU)-6, PCIT(AU)-10 and PCIT(AU)-13, Mumbai.

  • Rajib Jain assigned PCIT(RU)-1 and PCIT(RU)-2, Kolkata.

Further, Ritesh Mishra and Manish Sareen were entrusted with additional charge of CIT (Appeals) Unit-37 and Unit-43, Mumbai, respectively.

Focus on Strengthening Investigation and Assessment Wings

A major feature of the reshuffle is the strengthening of the Investigation Wing, with several experienced officers posted to important centres including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Patna, Pune, Ludhiana, Bhopal and Nagpur.

The order also reflects CBDT’s continued emphasis on faceless assessment structures, with multiple postings and additional charges in Assessment Units (AU), Review Units (RU), Verification Units (VU), Technical Units (TU) and e-Verification divisions.

Administrative Significance of the Order

This large-scale restructuring is expected to improve operational efficiency and ensure better leadership across the Income Tax Department. By combining promotions, transfers, deputation reviews and temporary additional charges, CBDT has sought to maintain continuity while strengthening key tax administration and investigation functions throughout the country.

The order will have a significant impact on the functioning of field formations as well as headquarters divisions under the Income Tax Department.
