The decision was formalized through a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice and follows the constitutional process involving the Supreme Court Collegium and the President of India.

Under Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the Chief Justice of a High Court is appointed by the President of India, acting in consultation with the CJI and the state’s governor.

The nomination and subsequent clearance reflect the judiciary’s independent functioning within the constitutional framework.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the development on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the President had approved the appointment in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Transition of Leadership in Jharkhand High Court

Justice Sonak will assume charge as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court after the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who is set to demit office on January 8, 2026.

This leadership transition ensures judicial continuity and administrative stability at the Jharkhand High Court, which plays a vital role in handling civil, criminal, constitutional and public interest cases across the state of Jharkhand, India.
