Chhattisgarh is strengthening its sports ecosystem with new infrastructure, talent programmes and major events, while the Nava Raipur Open 2026 is positioning the state as an emerging golf and sports tourism destination.

Raipur: Chhattisgarh is strengthening its position on India’s sporting map with a focus on sports infrastructure, talent development and large-scale competitions. The ongoing DP World PGTI Nava Raipur Open 2026 is adding another dimension to this effort by bringing professional golf to the state and creating opportunities to promote sports tourism.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and DP World PGTI President Kapil Dev jointly inaugurated the tournament at the Fairway Golf & Lake Resort in Nava Raipur on September 15. The competition is being held from September 15 to 18 and features 132 professional golfers, including 18 international players.

Nava Raipur Emerges as a Golfing Destination

The Nava Raipur Open is being seen as an important step in expanding Chhattisgarh’s presence in professional golf. The ₹1 crore championship has brought leading Indian and overseas golfers to the state and is giving Nava Raipur greater visibility on the professional golf calendar.

Sai said that hosting professional golf tournaments could attract visitors, encourage young people to participate in the sport and create opportunities for tourism, hospitality and local businesses in Nava Raipur. The Professional Golf Tour of India has also highlighted the tournament’s potential to promote golf tourism and youth participation in the state.

The event is particularly significant because Nava Raipur is hosting a DP World PGTI tournament for the second time in 2026. The continued presence of professional golf provides the city with an opportunity to build a more consistent identity as a sporting destination.

Focus on Sports Infrastructure and Young Talent

The state government’s sports strategy extends beyond hosting tournaments. According to Sai, Chhattisgarh is continuously expanding sports infrastructure and providing athletes with better training and opportunities to compete at national and international levels.

The state has also included the Mukhyamanti Khel Utkarsh Mission in its budget. The programme is aimed at identifying sporting talent and providing young athletes with modern training, resources and opportunities.

The wider objective is to ensure that promising sportspersons do not miss opportunities because of a lack of facilities or resources. Along with cricket, the state is seeking to promote participation across different sporting disciplines by hosting national-level competitions and developing facilities.

For young athletes, exposure to professional events can provide a practical understanding of competitive sport. The presence of established Indian and international golfers at Nava Raipur gives local youngsters an opportunity to watch professionals compete at close quarters.

Sports Tourism Gets a New Push

The government is also linking sporting events with tourism. Large competitions bring athletes, officials, sporting professionals and visitors to the host city, creating activity for hotels, restaurants, transport services and other local businesses.

The Nava Raipur Open is therefore being positioned as more than a golf tournament. It provides an opportunity to showcase Nava Raipur’s infrastructure and hospitality while introducing visiting players and spectators to Chhattisgarh’s wider tourism potential.

The PGTI has specifically noted that the tournament can help attract visitors and create opportunities for tourism, hospitality and local businesses in Nava Raipur.

This approach can also connect sports with the state’s cultural and natural attractions. Chhattisgarh has been seeking to increase the visibility of destinations beyond its major urban centres, giving sporting events a potential role in promoting the wider state.

Bastar Uses Sports to Engage Young People

The state’s sports push also extends to regions such as Bastar. Sai referred to participation in the Bastar Olympics as an example of increasing youth engagement through sports.

The initiative has provided young people in the region with platforms to participate in sporting activities and showcase their abilities. The state government has presented such programmes as part of its broader efforts to encourage youth participation and create opportunities beyond traditional sporting centres.

The development of sports facilities and competitions in different regions can help widen access to organised sports. It also allows sporting talent from smaller towns and remote areas to gain greater visibility.

Kapil Dev Backs Chhattisgarh’s Golf Potential

Kapil Dev, who heads the DP World PGTI, said Chhattisgarh has strong potential for golf and other sports. He also expressed the hope that the Nava Raipur Open could become a regular fixture in the state’s sporting calendar.

Kapil Dev highlighted the environment and hospitality in Chhattisgarh as strengths for hosting professional golf. He also pointed to the potential of Nava Raipur to develop into an important golfing centre alongside established Indian destinations.

The participation of 132 professionals, including 18 overseas golfers, gives the tournament an international dimension. It also places Nava Raipur in front of players and sporting stakeholders from outside the state and country.

Building a Wider Sporting Identity

Chhattisgarh’s current sports strategy combines infrastructure development, athlete training and event hosting with an emphasis on tourism and youth participation.

The Nava Raipur Open 2026 provides a visible example of this approach. With professional golf returning to the city, the state is using major sporting events to strengthen its sporting identity while creating potential links with tourism and local businesses.

For Chhattisgarh, the larger objective is to create an ecosystem where athletes can access better facilities, young people can find more opportunities to participate and cities such as Nava Raipur can attract national and international sporting events.

As the state expands its sporting infrastructure and continues to host professional competitions, sports could become an increasingly important part of Chhattisgarh’s tourism, youth development and economic activity.
