The initiative is aimed at promoting crop diversification in the state and encouraging farmers to move beyond traditional food grains, vegetables and fruit cultivation towards spice crops. The programme is being implemented under the state-funded component by the Department of Horticulture and Farm Forestry.

According to the department:
- Turmeric seeds are not supplied directly by the Directorate or district-level offices.
- Financial assistance under the scheme is provided to eligible farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
- Farmers purchase the seeds themselves and submit the required bills and other documents.
- The documents are examined before subsidy payment is processed.
- Physical verification of the crop is also conducted as part of the prescribed procedure.
- Subsidy benefits are provided only to eligible farmers after the required verification.
The department further stated that the seeds purchased by farmers for which subsidies are currently being provided are healthy and of high quality, with no reported germination-related issues.
₹1.38 Crore Already Paid to Farmers
Under the Spice Area Expansion Incentive Scheme, ₹138 lakh (₹1.38 crore) has so far been paid into farmers’ bank accounts.
The implementation of the scheme is expected to further expand the area under spice crops and promote crop diversification in Chhattisgarh.
The government expects the initiative to provide farmers with additional income opportunities while increasing local spice production and improving the availability of raw materials for spice-based industries.
