New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL) increased its coal supplies by 12.5% year-on-year to 61.20 million tonnes (MT) in September 2026, compared with 54.40 MT in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal. The growth came amid rising power demand and higher coal requirements from the power sector.
The Maharatna coal miner also recorded strong growth in coal production during the month, while supplies increased across both the power and non-regulated sectors.
Coal Supplies to Power Sector Rise 10.63%
According to CIL’s regulatory filing, coal supplies to the power sector increased 10.63% year-on-year to 48.90 MT in September 2026, compared with 44.20 MT in the same month of the previous fiscal.
Supplies to the non-regulated sector also recorded strong growth of 19.41% during the month.
Key September figures include:
- Total coal supplies: 61.20 MT
- Year-on-year growth: 12.5%
- Power sector supplies: 48.90 MT
- Power sector growth: 10.63%
- Coal production: 53.50 MT
- Production growth: 9.18%
- Non-regulated sector supply growth: 19.41%

CIL Coal Production Rises 9.18% in September
CIL’s coal production increased 9.18% to 53.50 MT in September FY2026-27, compared with 49 MT in September of the previous fiscal year.
The increase in production supported higher supplies to the power sector and other consumers amid sustained energy demand.
Q2 Coal Supplies Increase 12.04%
Coal India also reported strong growth in coal supplies during the second quarter of FY2026-27.
CIL’s total coal supplies during Q2 stood at 186.04 MT, registering a 12.04% increase over the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.
Power sector supplies also recorded double-digit growth during the quarter.

Power sector supplies increased to 148.20 MT in Q2 FY2026-27 from 133.50 MT in the year-ago period.
Coal production during the quarter rose 3.81% to 151.37 MT, compared with 145.82 MT in Q2 of the previous financial year.
CIL Liquidates Around 63 MT of Pithead Coal Stocks
Higher coal supplies during the first half of FY2026-27 also helped CIL reduce its pithead coal inventory.
The company said it liquidated around 63 MT of pithead coal stocks during the first six months of the current fiscal.
The increase in supplies, combined with the liquidation of stocks, supported coal availability for the power sector and other consumers.
Coal India Targets 815 MT Production in FY2026-27
CIL said the operational momentum recorded in September and Q2 FY2026-27 positions the company to pursue its production and supply targets while continuing to contribute to the country’s energy security.
With the monsoon season over, the company expects coal production and supplies to gain further momentum.
For FY2026-27, CIL has been assigned:
- Coal production target: 815 MT
- Coal supply target: 850 MT
The company’s September and Q2 performance will support its efforts to meet these annual targets as it enters the post-monsoon period.
