Guwahati: Former 1992-batch civil servant Debashish Sharma has been named as the candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll in Assam, marking a swift transition from senior administration to active politics.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency will go to the polls on October 6, 2026, while counting of votes is scheduled for October 9.
Sharma’s entry into the electoral contest comes just days after he took voluntary retirement from government service. He served as the Nagaon District Commissioner before stepping down on September 3.
He entered the BJP on September 8 and was subsequently chosen as the party’s candidate for the bypoll. His candidature brings a former senior district administrator directly into an electoral contest in the constituency where he had recently served as the top district official.
Why the Nagaon Lok Sabha Seat Fell Vacant
The bypoll has been necessitated by the vacancy created after Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who had won the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general election, moved to state politics.
Bordoloi later joined the BJP and won the Dispur Assembly constituency in the recent Assam Assembly elections. His election to the state legislature resulted in the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat becoming vacant, paving the way for the October bypoll.
With Sharma now in the race, the contest has gained additional attention because of his recent administrative role in the same district.
His candidature also places his transition from bureaucracy to politics under public scrutiny, particularly because of the short gap between his retirement from government service and entry into electoral politics.

Complaint Filed Over Sharma’s Tenure as Nagaon DC
Sharma’s candidature comes against the backdrop of a complaint filed last week by Congress MP Rakibul Hussain with the Assam Chief Electoral Officer.
Hussain sought a review of various decisions taken during Sharma’s tenure as Nagaon District Commissioner and requested appropriate action. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office subsequently forwarded the complaint to the Election Commission for necessary action and instructions.
The development adds another layer to Sharma’s political entry, as questions surrounding his administrative tenure could become part of the electoral discourse ahead of the bypoll.
However, his candidature has now been formally announced, making him one of the key contenders in the Nagaon contest.
A Three-Decade Administrative Career
Sharma brings more than three decades of public administration experience to the electoral arena.
He began his career in the Assam Civil Services in 1992, with his first posting in Barpeta. Over the years, he held several important administrative assignments across Assam and outside the state.
Among his notable positions was that of Special Officer to the then Assam Governor, Lt Gen SK Sinha. He also served as Deputy Resident Commissioner of Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, where he represented the Assam government in Maharashtra.
His administrative experience further included serving as Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and as District Commissioner of Morigaon.
He was later posted as District Commissioner of Nagaon, the same constituency where he has now entered the electoral race.
After serving in the administration for several decades, Sharma took voluntary retirement on September 3, 2026, while holding the Nagaon post.
From Administration to Electoral Politics
Sharma’s political transition has taken place within a matter of days.
After taking VRS from government service, he joined the BJP on September 8. Two days later, he was named as the party’s candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.
The quick shift has made Sharma’s political debut particularly notable. His experience in district administration, municipal governance and state representation could become an important part of his campaign narrative.
For voters in Nagaon, the contest will also bring a familiar administrative figure into the political arena. Sharma had served as the district’s senior-most administrative officer before choosing to enter electoral politics.
The bypoll will therefore test whether his long administrative career can translate into electoral support.
Debashish Sharma’s Journey Beyond Bureaucracy
Debashish Sharma is an English literature graduate and holds a postgraduate qualification in public relations. His career in public service began in 1992 with the Assam Civil Services.
Over the course of his career, he worked in several administrative and representative roles, including Special Officer to the Assam Governor, Deputy Resident Commissioner of Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and District Commissioner of Morigaon and Nagaon.
Beyond government service, Sharma has also been associated with social work. He is the founding chairman and trustee of Deepshikha, a cancer care and support organisation.
His journey from a senior district administrator to a Lok Sabha candidate within days of retirement marks a significant new phase in his public life. The October 6 Nagaon bypoll will now be his first major electoral test in active politics.
