New Delhi: The AMCA stealth fighter prototype programme has entered a crucial stage as India’s Ministry of Defence moves forward with selecting a private industry partner to build the first prototypes of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The winning consortium is expected to be announced between January and March 2027. This project is one of India’s most ambitious defence aviation programmes and aims to develop the country’s first indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft.

The AMCA project is being led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Ministry of Defence and is expected to strengthen India’s self-reliance in advanced military aviation technology.

What Is The AMCA Programme

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s planned fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. The aircraft is being designed with advanced stealth features, internal weapon bays, supercruise capability, artificial intelligence-enabled systems, and next-generation sensors. The fighter is expected to become a key part of the Indian Air Force’s future combat fleet.

Why The AMCA Programme Is Important

The AMCA programme represents a major step in India’s effort to reduce dependence on imported fighter aircraft. The project aligns with the government’s vision of strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

AMCA Stealth Fighter Prototype: Defence Ministry Issues RFP To Three Final Contenders

The Ministry of Defence has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to three shortlisted industry groups competing for the prototype development contract. The final contenders include:

Tata Advanced Systems Limited Consortium

This consortium is led by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), which has extensive experience in aerospace manufacturing and international defence partnerships.

Larsen & Toubro – Bharat Electronics Consortium

The second group combines the engineering capabilities of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a major defence electronics company.

Bharat Forge Led Consortium

The third consortium includes Bharat Forge along with partners such as BEML and Data Patterns, bringing expertise in manufacturing, mobility systems, and defence technologies.

What The Winning Partner Will Do

The selected industry partner will work closely with the Aeronautical Development Agency. Its responsibilities will include:

  • Manufacturing AMCA prototypes
  • Establishing production infrastructure
  • Supporting flight testing
  • Managing supply chains
  • Coordinating with defence suppliers
  • Assisting in aircraft certification activities

The chosen company will play a critical role in transforming the AMCA design into a flying aircraft.

₹15,000 Crore Budget Approved For AMCA Stealth Fighter Prototype Development

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved approximately ₹15,000 crore for the AMCA prototype development programme. The funding will support the construction and testing of five AMCA prototypes before the aircraft enters full-scale production.

Expected Timeline

According to current plans:

  • Industry partner selection: Early 2027
  • Prototype rollout: Around 2027-2028
  • First flight: Expected in 2028
  • Certification phase: Early 2030s
  • Operational induction: Around 2034

These timelines may evolve as development progresses.

Advanced Features Planned For The AMCA

The aircraft will use special shaping and radar-absorbing materials to reduce detection by enemy radar systems. This will improve survivability in highly contested airspace.

Internal Weapons Bay

Unlike conventional fighters carrying weapons externally, the AMCA will carry weapons inside the fuselage. This design helps maintain stealth characteristics during combat missions.

Artificial Intelligence And Advanced Sensors

The aircraft is expected to feature AI-assisted decision-making systems and modern sensor fusion technologies. These capabilities will help pilots process battlefield information more effectively.

Supercruise Capability

The AMCA is expected to sustain supersonic flight without relying heavily on afterburners. This improves fuel efficiency and operational range during missions.

Engine Development Plans

Initial AMCA variants are expected to use the American GE F414 engine. India is simultaneously pursuing indigenous engine development for future versions through international and domestic collaborations. Recent industry partnerships involving Rolls-Royce and Indian companies highlight growing efforts to develop a locally produced combat engine.

Why Private Industry Participation Matters

Traditionally, India’s military aircraft programmes have relied heavily on public sector organisations. The AMCA programme marks a significant shift by giving private industry a leading role in prototype development and future production. Officials believe this approach can improve efficiency, accelerate timelines, and strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
