New Delhi: The India-EU FTA is moving closer to completion, with Poland’s Ambassador to India, Piotr Antoni Switalski, expressing confidence that the landmark trade agreement will be signed and become operational by the end of 2026. According to official statements and government sources, there is “no reason for delay” as most major formalities have already been completed.

The agreement is expected to strengthen trade, investment, business cooperation, and professional mobility between India and the European Union, creating new opportunities for companies and workers on both sides.

Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Ambassador Piotr Antoni Switalski said the agreement is progressing smoothly and remains on track for completion this year. He noted that legal reviews have already been completed and only final procedures remain.

Switalski, who previously served as a European Union official, said trade agreements usually require extensive processing, but he remains optimistic that the India-EU FTA will be ready and operational by year-end.

Investment Protection Agreement Also Important

The Polish envoy highlighted the need for an Investment Protection Agreement to complement the Free Trade Agreement. According to him, investment protection will play an important role in strengthening long-term economic relations between India and European nations.

Final Stages Of The India-EU FTA

Government sources have confirmed that the legal scrubbing process of the agreement has been completed. Currently, internal approvals and translation procedures are underway on the European Union side before the final signing process can take place.

Both India and the European Union remain committed to completing the remaining formalities and signing the agreement before the end of 2026.

Long Journey Towards Completion

The India-EU Free Trade Agreement has been under discussion for many years. Negotiations were originally launched in 2007 but faced several challenges and delays. Talks were revived in 2022, leading to significant progress over the last few years.

The breakthrough was officially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi earlier this year.

Why The India-EU FTA Matters

The India-EU trade relationship has become increasingly important in recent years. According to official trade data, bilateral trade in goods between India and the European Union reached approximately USD 136.54 billion in 2024-25. India’s exports to the EU stood at USD 75.85 billion, while imports were valued at USD 60.68 billion.

Trade in services between the two sides reached around USD 83.10 billion in 2024, highlighting the growing economic partnership.

One Of The World’s Largest Trade Partnerships

Together, India and the European Union account for nearly one-fourth of global GDP and a significant share of international trade.

The agreement is expected to create one of the largest free trade frameworks in the world, improving market access for businesses and boosting economic growth.

Key Benefits Expected From The Agreement

The proposed FTA is expected to provide Indian exporters with easier access to European markets.

Many products could benefit from lower tariffs and reduced trade barriers, making Indian goods more competitive across EU countries.

Growth In Services And Professional Mobility

The agreement is also expected to support professionals working in sectors such as information technology, engineering, finance, and consulting.

New mobility frameworks could make it easier for skilled Indian professionals to access opportunities in European markets.

More Opportunities For European Businesses

European companies could gain improved access to India’s rapidly growing consumer market.

The deal is also expected to encourage greater investment flows and strengthen business partnerships across multiple sectors.
