New Delhi: The India-EAEU FTA is gaining fresh momentum as India and Russia work on new logistics routes and payment systems to strengthen trade with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The initiative aims to improve transport connectivity, protect investments, and help both countries achieve their target of USD 100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, in line with commitments made during recent India-Russia summits.

India-EAEU FTA: India and Russia Strengthen Trade Connectivity

India and Russia are preparing new transport and logistics corridors to support the proposed India-EAEU Free Trade Agreement. The plan focuses on improving cargo movement between India and the five-member Eurasian Economic Union, which includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan.

Both countries are also working on agreements to protect investments and make business operations more predictable for companies trading across the region.

India-EAEU FTA: New Logistics Routes to Improve Trade

The proposed logistics network includes the Chennai–Vladivostok Eastern Maritime Corridor, the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), and greater use of the Northern Sea Route. These projects are expected to reduce transportation time, improve supply chains, and lower logistics costs for exporters and importers.

What are the Focus Areas of India-EAEU FTA

India and Russia are also expanding their bilateral payment system using national currencies. The two countries are continuing work on payment mechanisms and financial messaging systems that can support uninterrupted trade and reduce dependence on traditional international payment channels.

USD 100 Billion Trade Target by 2030

Both governments have reaffirmed their goal of increasing annual bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030. Officials believe better logistics, smoother payment systems, and a comprehensive free trade agreement with the EAEU will play a major role in achieving this target.

Investment Protection and Free Trade Talks

India and Russia are also pushing forward negotiations on an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement alongside the proposed India-EAEU Free Trade Agreement.

These agreements are expected to encourage new investments, improve business confidence, and create long-term economic cooperation between India and EAEU member countries.

India-EAEU FTA: Key Sectors Expected to Benefit

The proposed trade framework covers several strategic sectors, including:

  • Manufacturing and industrial machinery
  • Agriculture and food processing
  • Energy and petroleum
  • Digital technology and telecommunications
  • Space cooperation
  • Urban infrastructure
  • Civil nuclear energy

Energy cooperation remains one of the strongest pillars of the India-Russia strategic partnership, with continued collaboration in oil, LNG, fertilizers, and nuclear power projects.

Why the India-EAEU FTA Matters

The Eurasian Economic Union represents a large market connecting Europe and Asia. A successful free trade agreement could reduce tariffs, improve market access for Indian exporters, strengthen supply chains, and increase trade in engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, textiles, and machinery. It would also diversify India’s export markets while deepening its long-term strategic partnership with Russia and other EAEU nations.
