New Delhi: LM2500 Gas turbine technology transfer has received a major boost as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signed a Technology Transfer agreement with Hyderabad-based Vertex Engineering Systems. According to official information from DRDO’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), the agreement will enable indigenous fabrication, installation, and commissioning of LM2500 gas turbines used in Indian Navy warships. The move supports India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission and aims to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.

DRDO Signs LM2500 Gas Turbine Technology Transfer Agreement With Vertex Engineering

The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a premier DRDO laboratory, has transferred technology related to the LM2500 marine gas turbine to Vertex Engineering Systems Pvt. Ltd. The agreement focuses on indigenous fabrication, installation, system integration, testing, and commissioning of the propulsion system in India.

This transfer is expected to reduce India’s dependence on foreign suppliers for maintenance and support of critical naval propulsion systems.

What Is The LM2500 Gas Turbine

The LM2500 is one of the world’s most widely used marine gas turbines. It powers several classes of naval vessels, including destroyers, frigates, and aircraft carriers. The engine is also used in multiple Indian Navy warships because of its reliability and high power output.

More than 2,500 LM2500 units are reportedly in service globally, making it a proven propulsion platform for naval operations.

Why LM2500 Gas Turbine Technology Transfer Is Important

The transfer will help Indian industry gain expertise in handling highly complex marine propulsion technologies. By building local capabilities, India can reduce maintenance costs, improve fleet readiness, and ensure faster support for naval vessels.

The initiative is also aligned with the Government of India’s vision of self-reliance in strategic defence technologies under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme.

Scope Of The Technology Transfer

Fabrication And Manufacturing

The agreement covers precision manufacturing of critical components such as base frames, piping systems, and acoustic enclosures. These components require advanced engineering and the use of specialized materials capable of operating in demanding maritime environments.

System Integration

The project also includes integration of gas generator modules, fuel systems, and lubrication systems. These processes require high levels of technical expertise to ensure safe and efficient performance.

Testing And Commissioning

The transferred technology includes installation, alignment, pressure testing, calibration, and commissioning procedures. These activities are essential to ensure reliable operation of naval propulsion systems.

Vertex Engineering’s Role In The Project

Vertex Engineering Systems, headquartered in Hyderabad, has experience in defence engineering and complex industrial fabrication. With this partnership, the company will play an important role in creating a domestic support ecosystem for LM2500 gas turbines used by the Indian Navy. The collaboration is expected to generate high-skilled employment opportunities and strengthen India’s defence industrial base.

What is the Impact Of LM2500 Gas Turbine Technology

Local fabrication and support capabilities can significantly reduce turnaround times for repairs and maintenance. This means Indian Navy warships can spend more time on operational duties and less time waiting for imported components or overseas support.

Improved Strategic Independence

The move strengthens India’s ability to sustain critical naval assets without depending heavily on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Such capabilities are increasingly important for long-term national security and maritime preparedness.

Part Of A Larger DRDO Indigenisation Push

The LM2500 transfer is one of several recent technology transfer initiatives undertaken by DRDO. NSTL also signed another Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology related to the Submarine Fired Decoy system, highlighting DRDO’s continued focus on expanding indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
