New Delhi: India’s HTT-40 Trainer Aircraft programme is set to achieve a major milestone as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) prepares to deliver the first batch of indigenous trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The delivery comes after months of delays caused by shortages of Honeywell engines, which affected the production schedule. Why The Programme Was Delayed
The Indian Air Force signed a ₹6,838 crore contract with HAL for 70 HTT-40 trainer aircraft to meet its basic pilot training requirements. HAL was originally expected to deliver 12 aircraft during FY 2025-26. However, no aircraft could be handed over because of delays in engine deliveries. The main challenge came from global supply-chain disruptions that affected Honeywell’s production schedule for the TPE331-12B engines.
Honeywell Engine Deliveries Revive The Programme
The situation improved after Honeywell delivered the first batch of engines to HAL. The engine deliveries have allowed HAL to complete the aircraft and prepare them for induction into IAF service. Under a contract worth around $100 million, Honeywell will support the HTT-40 programme with 88 TPE331-12B engines and related kits.
The company will directly provide a limited number of engines, while HAL will manufacture additional units in India through a technology transfer arrangement.
