New Delhi: HAL Prachand helicopter production has received a major boost as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is reportedly outsourcing the machining of critical helicopter components to private sector vendors.

The move comes after HAL secured a massive order for 156 Prachand Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) for the Indian Armed Forces.

The decision is aimed at increasing production capacity, reducing delivery timelines, and ensuring the timely execution of one of India’s largest indigenous military helicopter programs.

HAL Prachand Helicopter: HAL Expands Private Sector Participation

According to reports, HAL has begun outsourcing the machining of selected Prachand helicopter components to qualified private companies.

This strategy is intended to:

  • Increase manufacturing speed
  • Reduce production bottlenecks
  • Improve supply chain efficiency
  • Meet strict delivery schedules
  • Strengthen India’s defence industrial ecosystem

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader Make in India and defence indigenisation goals, which encourage greater participation from MSMEs and private defence manufacturers.

Massive Order for 156 Prachand Helicopters

In March 2025, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth approximately ₹62,700 crore with HAL for the procurement of 156 Prachand Light Combat Helicopters.

Order Breakdown

  • 66 helicopters for the Indian Air Force
  • 90 helicopters for the Indian Army

The helicopters will be delivered over a multi-year schedule, with production expected to ramp up significantly in the coming years.

Why HAL Needs Additional Manufacturing Capacity

The Prachand order is one of the largest helicopter contracts ever awarded to HAL. Along with ongoing projects such as:

  • Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft
  • Dhruv helicopters
  • Light Utility Helicopters (LUH)

HAL is handling an expanding defence production pipeline. Reports indicate the company currently has substantial orders for multiple military platforms, making production efficiency a top priority.

By involving private vendors in component manufacturing, HAL can focus more resources on:

  • Final assembly
  • Systems integration
  • Flight testing
  • Quality assurance

This model has already been adopted successfully in several global aerospace programs.

About the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter

The Prachand is India’s first indigenously designed and developed combat helicopter.

Key Features

  • Designed for high-altitude warfare
  • Capable of operating above 5,000 meters
  • Suitable for mountain and border operations
  • Equipped with advanced avionics and weapon systems
  • Optimized for operations along the borders with China and Pakistan

The helicopter was developed by HAL’s Rotary Wing Research and Design Centre and officially entered service in 2022.

HAL Prachand Helicopter: Indigenous Content Remains a Priority

The Ministry of Defence has stated that the Prachand program is expected to achieve more than 65% indigenous content during execution.

Economic Impact

  • More than 250 domestic companies expected to participate
  • Significant opportunities for MSMEs
  • Over 8,500 direct and indirect jobs expected to be generated

The increased involvement of private manufacturers is expected to further strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing base.

Strategic Importance of HAL Prachand Helicopter

The Prachand helicopter was developed to address India’s requirement for a dedicated attack helicopter capable of operating effectively in high-altitude regions, a need highlighted after the Kargil conflict.

The 156-helicopter procurement will:

  • Enhance India’s combat capabilities
  • Improve border security readiness
  • Increase self-reliance in defence manufacturing
  • Reduce dependence on foreign military platforms

The program is considered a key pillar of India’s long-term defence modernization strategy.
