According to official statements, the agreement aims to bring advanced predictive maintenance systems to the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft fleet.

What Is Predictive Maintenance?

Predictive maintenance uses:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Data analytics
  • Sensors
  • Real-time monitoring systems

These technologies help detect aircraft problems before a failure happens.

Benefits include:

  • Faster repairs
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Better mission readiness
  • Reduced aircraft downtime
  • Improved safety

IIT Bombay said the technology will use fully indigenous know-how developed in India.

Why the Su-30 MKI Is Important for India

The Sukhoi Su-30 MKI is one of the most important fighter aircraft in the Indian Air Force.

Key facts about the aircraft:

  • It is the backbone of the IAF fighter fleet
  • India operates over 270 Su-30 MKI jets
  • The aircraft is used for:
  • Air superiority missions
  • Long-range strike operations
  • Strategic defence roles

The aircraft is manufactured and upgraded in India with support from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

How IAF-IIT Bombay Deal Will Help India

Officials said the project supports the government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” mission.

Expected advantages include:

Better Operational Readiness

Aircraft can remain mission-ready for longer periods.

Stronger Indigenous Technology

The maintenance system will be built using Indian research and engineering.

Faster Decision-Making

AI-based systems can quickly identify technical issues.

Boost to Aerospace Innovation

The project may help future Indian fighter jet programs.

IIT Bombay’s Official Statement

IIT Bombay described the partnership as a major technological step for India’s aerospace sector.

The institute said the project will support:

  • Prognostic maintenance
  • Prescriptive maintenance
  • Predictive engineering systems
  • Data-driven aircraft servicing

The institute also said the collaboration will deepen India’s technical self-reliance in strategic defence technologies.

Bigger Push Toward Modernisation

The agreement comes at a time when India is heavily modernising its Su-30 MKI fleet.

India is already working on:

  • Super Sukhoi upgrade program
  • AESA radar integration
  • Electronic warfare upgrades
  • Indigenous weapons integration
  • AI-enabled maintenance systems

Experts believe predictive maintenance can significantly improve the lifespan and efficiency of fighter aircraft.
