New Delhi: India’s Gallium Nitride chip technology breakthrough has marked a major milestone for the country’s defence and semiconductor sector

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed indigenous GaN semiconductor chips, making India the 7th country in the world with this advanced capability.

The technology is considered critical for modern fighter aircraft, radar systems, electronic warfare, satellite communication, and next-generation defence equipment.

The achievement was highlighted by Union Minister Meenakashi Lekhi in a social media post praising DRDO scientists and Dr. Meena Mishra.

What is Gallium Nitride  Chup Technology?

Gallium Nitride, commonly called GaN, is an advanced semiconductor material used in high-performance electronic systems.

Why GaN Chips Matter

  • Faster than traditional silicon chips
  • Handle higher power and higher temperatures
  • Improve radar range and accuracy
  • Use less energy
  • Work efficiently in extreme military conditions

GaN chips are mainly used in:

  • Advanced fighter jet radars
  • Electronic warfare systems
  • Missile guidance
  • 5G communication systems
  • Satellite communication
  • Defence surveillance systems

According to DRDO documents, the technology was developed by the Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), Delhi.

Details of Indian Gallium Nitride Chip Technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed GaN HEMT-based MMIC technology completely inside India.

Key highlights:

  • Development happened at DRDO laboratories in Delhi and Hyderabad
  • Indigenous testing and validation were completed in India
  • No foreign technology transfer was used
  • India joined an elite global group of nations with GaN capability

Official DRDO technology documents confirm that the chips are designed for high-frequency and high-power radar applications.

Why Indian Gallium Nitride Chip Technology Breakthrough Is Important

This development supports India’s larger goal of:

  • Atmanirbhar Bharat
  • Defence self-reliance
  • Reduced dependency on foreign military technology
  • Growth in semiconductor manufacturing

Experts believe the breakthrough can help future Indian defence projects such as:

  • AESA radars
  • Indigenous fighter aircraft
  • Electronic warfare systems
  • Space and satellite systems

DRDO officials have described GaN technology as a “game changer” for modern warfare systems.

Rafale Connection and Technology Denial

Reports suggest India earlier sought GaN technology transfer during the Rafale fighter jet negotiations with France. However, the advanced semiconductor technology was reportedly not shared due to its strategic military importance.

This reportedly encouraged Indian scientists to accelerate indigenous development efforts.

Role of Dr. Meena Mishra in Indian Gallium Nitride Chip Technology

Dr. Meena Mishra, associated with DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory, has been widely credited online for contributing to the indigenous GaN chip project.

Her work has gained attention after the breakthrough became public on social media platforms.

Civilian Uses of GaN Technology

Apart from defence, GaN chips can also be used in:

  • Electric vehicles
  • Fast chargers
  • Telecom infrastructure
  • Renewable energy systems
  • High-speed internet equipment

This means the technology may also support India’s future electronics and semiconductor industry growth.

India’s Semiconductor Push Gets Stronger

The GaN chip breakthrough comes at a time when India is heavily investing in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced electronics.

The government’s semiconductor mission aims to:

  • Build domestic chip manufacturing
  • Strengthen supply chains
  • Promote deep-tech innovation
  • Support strategic industries

Industry experts believe GaN technology can become a major pillar of India’s future defence-tech ecosystem.
