New Delhi: India has taken a major step toward defence self-reliance with the launch of the Indigenous Air-To-Air Refuelling Pod Development project. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has invited bids from Indian companies and research organizations to develop an advanced aerial refuelling pod under its Technology Development Fund (TDF) framework. 

This initiative aims to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities.

The project is expected to boost India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem while supporting the government’s broader vision of indigenous military technology development.

Details of DRDO Refuelling Pod Development

The Defence Research and Development Organisation officially released the tender on September 2, 2026. Interested companies can submit their proposals until October 20, 2026, under the Technology Development Fund programme.

The scheme encourages Indian industries, MSMEs, startups, and research institutions to develop critical defence technologies within the country.

What Is An Air-To-Air Refuelling Pod

An Air-To-Air Refuelling Pod is a specialized system mounted on an aircraft that allows it to transfer fuel to another aircraft during flight. This capability significantly extends the range, endurance, and operational flexibility of fighter jets and other military aircraft.

How The System Works

The proposed system will use the hose-and-drogue method, a widely used aerial refuelling technique. A flexible hose is deployed from the pod, and the receiving aircraft connects to it through a probe to receive fuel while flying.

What are the Key Features of DRDO Refuelling Pod Development

According to the tender requirements, the refuelling pod system will feature a modular architecture. A standard tanker aircraft configuration can carry up to three pods, with two mounted under the wings and one optional pod attached beneath the fuselage.

High Fuel Transfer Capability

The system is expected to deliver fuel at a transfer rate of up to 2,000 US gallons per minute. Such capacity would enable rapid refuelling operations during combat and long-range missions.

Wide Operating Envelope

The pods are required to function effectively at altitudes ranging from 10,000 feet to 40,000 feet. This operational flexibility will allow the Indian Air Force to support a wide range of aircraft and mission profiles.
