New Delhi: India Vietnam BrahMos missile deal marks a major step in India’s growing defence exports and Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen its coastal security in the South China Sea. Vietnam has officially signed a $629 million (around ₹5,600 crore) agreement with India to acquire the BrahMos Block-III supersonic cruise missile system, making it the second Southeast Asian nation after the Philippines to operate the advanced missile. The development was confirmed by senior Indian officials during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

India Vietnam BrahMos Missile Deal: Vietnam Confirms BrahMos Missile Purchase

Vietnam has signed the long-awaited deal with India to purchase the BrahMos Block-III coastal defence missile system. The agreement, valued at approximately $629 million, was signed in March 2026 and publicly confirmed by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh during the Shangri-La Dialogue.

The purchase reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Vietnam in the Indo-Pacific region.

India Vietnam BrahMos Missile Deal: What Will Vietnam Receive

Under the agreement, Vietnam will receive:

  • Six coastal BrahMos missile batteries.
  • Integrated logistics support.
  • Operator training.
  • Technical assistance.
  • Long-term maintenance support.

This is one of Vietnam’s biggest defence acquisitions in recent years.

What Is the BrahMos Block-III Missile

The BrahMos Block-III is a two-stage, solid-fuel, supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia. Its key features include:

  • Speed of Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.0.
  • Strike range of 290–300 km.
  • Warhead carrying capacity of up to 300 kg.
  • Sea-skimming flight at around 10 metres above sea level.
  • Steep-dive terminal attack capability.
  • Fire-and-forget guidance system.
  • Ability to engage both land and sea targets.
  • Resistance to electronic jamming through advanced target acquisition.

These capabilities make it one of the world’s fastest operational cruise missiles.

Why Is This India Vietnam BrahMos Missile Deal Important

The deal is strategically important because of rising tensions in the South China Sea. Many Chinese-controlled islands and military bases fall within the missile’s operational range if launched from Vietnam’s coastline. The acquisition significantly improves Vietnam’s coastal defence and maritime deterrence capabilities.

Growing Defence Cooperation Between India and Vietnam

India and Vietnam have steadily expanded defence ties since 2022. The two countries have increased cooperation through defence exchanges, training programmes and strategic dialogue while sharing concerns over regional maritime security.

The BrahMos deal further strengthens this partnership and highlights India’s growing role as a trusted defence supplier.

Regional Security Picture

Vietnam becomes the second ASEAN country, after the Philippines, to operate the BrahMos missile system. Indonesia is also reported to be moving closer to acquiring the missile, indicating growing regional interest in India’s defence technology. Meanwhile, Japan and the Philippines have also increased joint military exercises, reflecting broader security cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.
