Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: IAF .50 Cal Sniper Rifles are set to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s elite Garud Special Forces after the IAF issued a Request for Information (RFI) for procuring heavy-calibre sniper rifles. The proposed acquisition is aimed at improving long-range precision strike capability, counter-terrorism operations, and special missions. According to the RFI details and the Indian Air Force’s ongoing modernisation efforts, the new rifles will enhance the Garud commandos’ effectiveness in complex combat environments.

What is the Reasons of IAF .50 Calibre Sniper Rifles Procurement

The Indian Air Force has invited information from defence manufacturers for the procurement of 12.7×99 mm NATO (.50 calibre) sniper rifles for the Garud Special Forces.

An RFI (Request for Information) is an early stage in the defence procurement process. It helps the armed forces understand available technologies and gather technical inputs before issuing a formal tender.

What Are .50 Calibre Sniper Rifles

The 12.7×99 mm NATO (.50 BMG) round is one of the world’s most powerful military sniper calibres. These rifles are designed to:

  • Engage targets beyond 1,500 metres.
  • Neutralise lightly armoured vehicles.
  • Destroy radar equipment and communication systems.
  • Conduct anti-material and long-range precision missions.

Globally, rifles such as the Barrett M82/M107, McMillan TAC-50, and Steyr HS .50 are widely used by modern armed forces for such operations.

How Will This Procurement Benefit Garud Special Forces

The Garud Special Forces are the Indian Air Force’s elite special operations unit, raised in 2004. The induction of .50 calibre sniper rifles will significantly improve their capabilities in:

  • Counter-terrorism operations.
  • Counter-insurgency missions.
  • High-value target engagement.
  • Strategic infrastructure protection.
  • Deep precision strike operations.
  • Special missions in hostile environments.

These heavy-calibre rifles will complement the Garud commandos’ existing inventory of assault rifles, carbines, and medium-calibre sniper systems.

Advanced Features Expected In The New Sniper Rifles

According to the RFI, the rifles are expected to support advanced battlefield requirements. Likely features include:

  • Day and night optical sights.
  • Thermal imaging scopes.
  • Ballistic computers.
  • High-precision optics.
  • Improved recoil management.
  • Easy maintenance.
  • Compatibility with existing military systems.

These features will improve operational accuracy under different weather and combat conditions.

IAF .50 Calibre Sniper Rifles Procurement To Support ‘Make In India’

The RFI is expected to attract responses from leading global defence manufacturers. Indian defence companies may also participate under the Make in India initiative through indigenous development or licensed production, supporting domestic defence manufacturing.
