New Delhi: The Indian Army portable stand-off explosive detectors program is moving forward as part of a major effort to strengthen counter-IED (Improvised Explosive Device) capabilities. The Army plans to procure around 350 advanced portable explosive detectors that can identify threats from a safe distance without direct physical contact.

This procurement is expected to improve the safety of bomb disposal teams and support India’s broader goal of defence self-reliance under the Make In India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Details of Indian Army Portable Stand-Off Explosive Detectors Procurement

The Army’s Combat Engineers Directorate has issued a Request For Information (RFI) for hand-held explosive detection systems. These devices must be capable of detecting traces of:

  • Military-grade explosives
  • Commercial explosives
  • Homemade explosive materials

The equipment should provide clear detection results in less than 30 seconds, allowing security personnel to make quick decisions during operations.

Key Technical Requirements

The proposed detectors should identify both:

  • Organic explosive materials
  • Inorganic explosive materials

The systems must also work across different forms, including:

  • Vapour
  • Liquid
  • Powder
  • Particles
  • Mixed explosive compounds

The goal is to detect threats without requiring personnel to physically touch or approach suspicious objects.

What is the Reason of Indian Army Portable Stand-Off Explosive Detectors Procurement

India continues to face threats from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), especially in sensitive regions. IEDs remain one of the most dangerous weapons used by terrorists and insurgent groups because they can be hidden easily and triggered remotely.

Recent security operations have led to the recovery and neutralisation of multiple explosive devices across different parts of the country, highlighting the continued need for advanced detection technology.

Benefits Of Stand-Off Detection

Stand-off explosive detectors offer several advantages:

  • Reduced risk to bomb disposal teams
  • Faster identification of threats
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Better protection for military convoys
  • Enhanced security at military installations

By detecting explosives from a safe distance, these systems can significantly improve force protection during counter-terror operations.

Part Of A Larger Counter-IED Modernisation Plan

The planned procurement is only one element of a wider Army modernisation effort. The Combat Engineers Directorate has also explored the acquisition of:

Telescopic Manipulators

These systems allow personnel to handle suspicious packages from a safe distance of several metres.

Advanced Mine Detection Equipment

The Ministry of Defence has previously initiated programs for modern mine detection systems capable of locating both metallic and non-metallic explosive threats. Such procurements are aimed at creating a comprehensive bomb disposal and counter-IED ecosystem for the Indian Army.

Indian Army Portable Stand-Off Explosive Detectors Procurement: Strong Push For Make In India

The procurement will reportedly be processed under categories that prioritize Indian industry participation. Manufacturers are expected to demonstrate substantial indigenous content in their products, including:

  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Critical components
  • Manufacturing capabilities

This approach aligns with India’s ongoing defence indigenisation strategy, which increasingly favours domestically produced military equipment.

Support For Domestic Defence Industry

The project could create opportunities for Indian defence technology companies working in:

  • Sensors
  • Electronics
  • Detection systems
  • Defence software
  • Security technologies

The government has continued to encourage local defence manufacturing through procurement policies that favour Indian-developed systems.

Strategic Importance Of The Indian Army Portable Stand-Off Explosive Detectors Procurement

The acquisition of 350 portable stand-off explosive detectors reflects the Army’s focus on:

  • Force protection
  • Counter-terror operations
  • Faster threat detection
  • Technology-driven battlefield capabilities
  • Defence self-reliance

As security challenges evolve, advanced explosive detection systems are becoming an essential part of modern military operations.
