New Delhi: Indian Army advances MUM-T system for autonomous battlefield integration as part of its efforts to build a more connected, intelligent, and technology-driven combat force. The Indian Army’s Armoured Corps is developing a Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) System that combines unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), drones, and advanced command-and-control networks. The initiative aims to improve battlefield awareness, reduce risks to soldiers, and enhance combat effectiveness in modern warfare.

The project reflects India’s growing focus on autonomous military technologies and indigenous defence innovation.

What Is the MUM-T System

MUM-T stands for Manned-Unmanned Teaming, a concept that allows soldiers and military platforms to work together with autonomous systems.

The system integrates unmanned ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and a central command-and-control station. This network enables faster decision-making and real-time information sharing across the battlefield.

How Will the MUM-T System Work?

The MUM-T system is designed to connect multiple platforms into a single combat network. It will use advanced sensors, thermal imaging systems, electro-optical cameras, LiDAR technology, and secure communications. These technologies will help commanders detect, track, and respond to threats more effectively.

Autonomous Ground Vehicle at the Core

At the heart of the system is an advanced Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). The vehicle is expected to carry payloads ranging from 500 kg to 1,000 kg. It can operate at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph and may remain active for up to 10–12 hours in hybrid mode.

This endurance makes it suitable for long-duration missions in challenging environments.

Advanced Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance

The UGV will feature autonomous navigation capabilities. It can perform mapping, localisation, obstacle detection, and route planning with minimal human intervention. Secure communication systems will allow it to operate effectively even in complex terrain.

These features reduce the need for constant operator control and improve mission efficiency.

MUM-T System has Multiple Combat Roles

The MUM-T platform is being designed as a multi-role battlefield asset. It can support a wide range of mission payloads, including:

  • Remote Weapon Stations
  • Medium Machine Guns
  • Anti-Tank Guided Missiles
  • Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) equipment
  • Reconnaissance sensors

This flexibility allows the platform to adapt to different operational requirements.

Integration with Drones and Loitering Munitions

The system will also integrate UAVs and loitering munitions. This combination will provide layered offensive and defensive capabilities. The integration enhances battlefield awareness and allows forces to engage threats at greater distances.

Why Is the MUM-T System Important

Modern warfare is increasingly shifting towards autonomous and network-centric operations. Military forces around the world are investing in unmanned technologies to improve efficiency and reduce risks to personnel.

The Indian Army’s MUM-T programme aligns with this global trend while supporting India’s indigenous defence modernisation efforts.
