New Delhi: Indian Navy global reach is expanding rapidly, with Indian warships operating from the South China Sea to the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said these deployments demonstrate India’s growing blue-water maritime capability and its ability to protect national interests far beyond its immediate region.

Speaking at the Indian Navy’s Biannual Commanders’ Conference 2026 in New Delhi, he highlighted the Navy’s increasing role in maritime security, deterrence, economic protection, and regional stability.

He noted that deployments stretching from the South China Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean show the Navy’s ability to operate effectively across long distances. According to the minister, these operations strengthen India’s position as a major maritime power and support national interests in critical sea lanes.

Indian Navy Plays Key Role In National Security

Rajnath Singh emphasized that the Indian Navy’s responsibilities now extend far beyond safeguarding India’s coastline. He said the Navy contributes significantly to economic security, regional stability, deterrence, and power projection.

The minister added that a strong naval presence is essential for protecting India’s maritime interests in an increasingly complex global environment.

Strategic Importance Of Indian Navy Global Reach for Maritime Security

The Defence Minister pointed out that rising maritime traffic, evolving threats, and complex operational challenges require stronger surveillance and monitoring systems. He called for further improvements in maritime domain awareness and advanced response capabilities. According to him, stronger monitoring mechanisms have become a strategic necessity for ensuring national security.

Indian Navy Global Reach: Challenges In The Maritime Domain

Rajnath Singh noted that maritime security is becoming more challenging due to congestion at sea, deceptive practices, and grey-zone activities. These developments create new risks for global trade and maritime stability. He stressed the need for continuous modernization and technological advancement to address emerging threats.

Need For Advanced Surveillance Systems

The Defence Minister urged the Navy to strengthen its surveillance network and analytical capabilities. He said modern technology will play a crucial role in detecting threats and maintaining operational readiness.

Government Reaffirms Commitment To Naval Modernization

Rajnath Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to naval modernization under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He described the Navy as a key pillar of the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

The minister encouraged the force to continue transforming itself into a future-ready, combat-capable, and globally respected maritime force.

India’s Role As First Responder In The Indian Ocean

The Defence Minister highlighted India’s growing reputation as a First Responder and Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region.

He said the international community increasingly recognizes India’s role in maintaining regional stability. This recognition reflects India’s expanding strategic influence and responsible maritime leadership.

Operation Ujjra Suraksha And Maritime Trade Protection

Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Navy’s performance in West Asia, particularly its role in protecting Indian-flagged merchant vessels. He highlighted the safe escort and transit of ships, including LPG carriers, through the Strait of Hormuz under Operation Ujjra Suraksha.

Why The Mission Matters

The operation is particularly important because India depends heavily on maritime trade. The Defence Minister noted that nearly 85-90% of India’s trade by volume and around 50% of its natural gas imports arrive by sea. Therefore, secure sea lanes remain critical for economic growth, energy security, and national preparedness.

Indian Navy Global Reach: Shipbuilding Industry Gains Momentum

Rajnath Singh stated that India’s shipbuilding ecosystem has matured significantly and is now meeting global standards. He revealed that recently commissioned naval platforms contain more than 75% indigenous content. This achievement supports the government’s vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

India Eyes Warship Export Market

The Defence Minister said India should not only meet domestic naval requirements but also emerge as a major exporter of advanced warships. He emphasized stronger partnerships with friendly nations and greater support for the domestic shipbuilding industry.

Future Expansion Plans For The Indian Navy

The Navy continues to pursue ambitious force expansion plans. Multiple indigenous warships and support vessels are expected to join the fleet in the coming years. India’s long-term objective is to build a fleet of more than 200 ships over the next decade.

Focus On Operational Readiness

The three-day Naval Commanders’ Conference brought together top naval leadership to review operational readiness, maritime security challenges, technological induction, and future capability development. Senior commanders discussed priorities aimed at strengthening India’s maritime power in the years ahead.
