New Delhi: India is accelerating its underwater warfare modernization through the Indian Navy submarine standardisation program, a major initiative aimed at developing common indigenous systems for both Project-76 (P-76) conventional submarines and Project-77 (P-77) nuclear-powered attack submarines. The move is designed to reduce foreign dependence, simplify logistics, lower maintenance costs, and strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical naval technologies.
The plan focuses on creating a unified technology ecosystem that will allow future Indian submarines to share sensors, combat systems, weapons, and support infrastructure while maintaining their distinct operational roles.
What Is The Indian Navy’s New Standardisation Strategy
The Indian Navy is pursuing one of its most ambitious indigenous submarine programs by ensuring that P-76 diesel-electric submarines and P-77 nuclear attack submarines are built around a common technology architecture.

The objective is to increase domestic manufacturing, reduce lifecycle dependence on foreign suppliers, simplify crew training, and establish a unified “National Submarine” ecosystem for future underwater fleets.
A Unified Digital Brain For Future Submarines
At the center of the initiative is a fully indigenous Combat Management System (CMS), which will serve as the operational brain of both submarine classes.
The CMS will integrate sensor data, track targets, support navigation, manage weapons, and assist commanders in tactical decision-making. Using the same software and hardware architecture across both fleets will make upgrades easier and reduce maintenance complexity.
Standardised Crew Consoles And Displays
Reports indicate that both submarine classes will use identical multi-function displays and operator consoles.
This approach will allow sailors to transition more easily between submarine classes while reducing training requirements and support costs.
Indian Navy Submarine Standardisation Program: Modern Sensors And Shared Optronic Masts
The Indian Navy is also standardising situational awareness systems across both projects. Instead of traditional hull-penetrating optical periscopes, both submarines are expected to use advanced indigenous non-penetrating optronic masts being developed by the Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE).
These systems will feature high-definition cameras, thermal imagers, infrared sensors, and fibre-optic connectivity to provide real-time battlefield awareness.
Common Electronic Warfare And Communication Systems
The submarines are also expected to share communication masts, Electronic Support Measures (ESM), and electronic warfare suites. This will ensure both fleets possess similar signal intelligence and threat-detection capabilities.
Standardised Weapons For Greater Flexibility
The Indian Navy plans to equip both P-76 and P-77 submarines with the indigenous Varunastra heavyweight torpedo and the next-generation Takshak torpedo currently under development. Using common weapons across multiple platforms will simplify procurement, maintenance, and operational planning.
Common Missile Interfaces
While the larger P-77 submarines are expected to feature a 24-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS) for long-range strike weapons, the control systems for missiles such as Nirbhay and BrahMos-II are expected to remain largely common. This design could allow future P-76 submarines to deploy similar weapons through torpedo tubes or modular launch systems.
Sonar And Stealth Technologies To Be Shared
Both submarine projects are expected to rely heavily on indigenous sonar technologies developed by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a DRDO laboratory with extensive experience in underwater sensors. The planned Integrated Sonar System is expected to include bow-mounted sonars, flank arrays, towed arrays, and passive detection systems.
Improved Stealth Capabilities
To reduce detection risk, both submarine classes are expected to use indigenous anechoic tiles designed to absorb enemy sonar signals. These stealth technologies are critical for modern submarine warfare and survivability.
Propulsion Technologies May Also Share Common Elements
Although the P-77 will use a nuclear reactor and the P-76 will use diesel-electric propulsion with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP), the Navy is reportedly exploring common propulsion-quietening technologies.
One area under study is pump-jet propulsion, which is significantly quieter than conventional propellers and can help reduce a submarine’s acoustic signature.

Project-77 Nuclear Attack Submarines
Project-77 will provide India with advanced nuclear-powered attack submarines capable of long-endurance deployments and strategic missions.
The project received Cabinet Committee on Security approval for its first boats and represents a major step in strengthening India’s undersea deterrence.
Project-76 Conventional Submarines
Project-76 is India’s indigenous conventional submarine program and is expected to achieve around 90–95% indigenous content.
The project will build on technologies developed through previous naval programs while expanding India’s domestic submarine design capability.
