New Delhi: The Andaman and Nicobar Command launched Operation Lancer to assist the distressed merchant vessel MV Pyra near Great Nicobar Island. The cargo vessel had suffered a propulsion failure and was drifting at sea, creating a risk of grounding and a possible maritime emergency.

The rescue involved a coordinated response by the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and tug boats.

What is Operation Lancer

Operation Lancer is the Andaman and Nicobar Command’s coordinated operation to assist MV Pyra after the merchant vessel suffered propulsion failure near Great Nicobar Island. The response brought together the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and tug boats.

Their intervention helped secure the vessel in Indian territorial waters and reduced risks to the ship, its crew and the surrounding marine environment.

What Happened to MV Pyra

MV Pyra suffered a propulsion failure in waters near Great Nicobar Island, leaving the merchant vessel unable to move normally.

After receiving the distress call, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) launched Operation Lancer and began a coordinated response to assist the vessel.

The ship was reportedly drifting and faced a risk of grounding if timely assistance was not provided.

Indian Navy and Coast Guard Join Operation Lancer

Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard ships were deployed to the location as part of the rescue effort. They were supported by three tug boats to bring the situation under control. The coordinated operation successfully brought MV Pyra to a safer position.

The vessel was eventually safely anchored in India’s territorial waters off Great Nicobar Island, preventing the situation from developing into a larger maritime emergency.

Naval Technical Team Boards MV Pyra

The operation did not end after the vessel was safely anchored. A naval technical team boarded MV Pyra to assess its condition and provide technical assistance.

The aim was to understand the propulsion problem and help restore the vessel’s operational capability.

Operation Lancer also Helped Prevent Environmental Risk

A vessel losing propulsion close to an island can pose more than a safety risk to its crew. If a large merchant ship grounds or suffers serious damage, it can potentially create environmental problems, particularly if fuel or other material enters the sea.

The successful intervention therefore helped reduce the risk of a maritime accident near the ecologically sensitive Great Nicobar region. The government has itself highlighted environmental protection as an important consideration in the development and management of Great Nicobar.

Why is Great Nicobar Strategically important

Great Nicobar occupies an important location in the Indian Ocean region. The island is around 40 nautical miles from the major East-West international shipping route. Its location gives it significant maritime, economic and strategic importance for India.

The wider Andaman and Nicobar Command also plays a major role in protecting India’s maritime interests.

Andaman and Nicobar Command is the only tri-service operational command, integrating capabilities across the armed forces in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.

Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty took charge as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command on June 1, 2026. On assuming command, he stressed operational preparedness and the command’s role in maintaining security and stability in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific regions.
