Kolkata: India’s defence infrastructure is set to receive a major boost after West Bengal cleared the path for the DRDO Junput Test Facility.

The project, located in Purba Medinipur district near Digha, is expected to support the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) by reducing the growing workload at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha.

Official statements indicate that pending clearances have been addressed, helping the long-delayed project move forward.

What Is The DRDO Junput Test Facility

The proposed DRDO facility is being developed at Junput village in West Bengal. It is planned as an additional operational area linked to the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, one of India’s most important missile and weapon testing centres.

The facility covers around 8.73 acres along the Bay of Bengal coast. Its strategic location provides suitable conditions for missile trajectory tracking, radar calibration, and various defence-related trials.

Why DRDO Needs A New Testing Facility

Over the years, Chandipur has handled a large number of missile, radar, and weapon system trials. With India accelerating indigenous defence development, the demand for testing infrastructure has increased significantly. As a result, Chandipur’s existing facilities are operating under heavy workload pressure.

The Junput facility is expected to absorb short-range missile and radar-related trials, allowing Chandipur to focus more on long-range and strategic weapon testing.

DRDO Junput Test Facility: West Bengal Government Clears Pending Issues

According to recent statements, the West Bengal government has responded positively to DRDO’s requests and addressed administrative hurdles that had delayed the project. Officials stated that pending clearances have been resolved, helping bring the project back on track after years of uncertainty.

Earlier Delays And Local Challenges

The project had previously faced delays despite land acquisition and initial infrastructure development being completed.

According to information shared by the Ministry of Defence, construction of roads and hard-standing areas had already been finished before work was temporarily halted due to local unrest. The renewed cooperation between DRDO and the state government is expected to help revive progress on the facility.

How DRDO Junput Test Facility Will Strengthen India’s Defence Testing Network

The Junput range will complement the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur rather than replace it. By dividing testing responsibilities between the two locations, DRDO can conduct more trials efficiently while reducing bottlenecks in weapon system evaluation.

This additional capacity is important as India continues developing advanced missile systems, radar technologies, electronic warfare capabilities, and next-generation defence platforms.

Strategic Coastal Advantage

Junput’s location along the Bay of Bengal offers several operational advantages. The coastal environment supports safe missile tracking and testing activities while maintaining the required safety zones for defence trials. Its proximity to Chandipur also enables coordination between the two facilities.

Economic And Regional Impact

The project is expected to contribute to infrastructure development in Purba Medinipur district. Apart from strengthening national security, the facility could generate employment opportunities, improve connectivity, and attract additional defence-related investments to the region.

Boost To India’s Defence Modernisation

The Junput test facility aligns with India’s broader goal of expanding indigenous defence capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign technologies. With increased testing capacity, DRDO will be able to support faster development and validation of advanced weapon systems required by the Indian Armed Forces.
