New Delhi: The Delhi government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved a major infrastructure and development plan worth ₹441.1 crore aimed at improving living conditions in Jhuggi-Jhopdi (JJ) colonies across the capital. The initiative focuses on strengthening basic civic amenities and upgrading urban infrastructure in slum settlements.
The plan will be implemented through the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) over the financial years 2025-26 and 2026-27, covering 1,510 development projects across multiple JJ clusters.
1,510 Projects Approved Across Two Financial Years
Under the approved plan, a total of 1,510 infrastructure projects have been sanctioned:
- 2025–26: 1,253 projects worth ₹379.8 crore
- 2026–27: 257 projects worth ₹61.3 crore
- Total investment: ₹441.1 crore
The government said these projects aim to ensure long-term improvement in sanitation, water supply, roads, drainage systems, and public infrastructure in JJ colonies.
Key Infrastructure Development Works Planned
The approved projects include comprehensive upgrades across essential civic services:
- Construction and renovation of community toilets and public utility complexes
- Improvement of drinking water supply systems and sewer networks
- Development of internal roads, lanes, and drainage systems
- Installation and strengthening of street lighting systems
- Construction of boundary walls and entry gates
- Upgradation of community buildings and public spaces
- Beautification of neighbourhood infrastructure
- Strengthening of rainwater drainage systems
These upgrades aim to create cleaner, safer, and more livable environments for residents of JJ colonies.
Priority Areas Identified for Fast-Track Development
The government has identified several high-priority regions where development work will be accelerated. These include:
- Narela
- Timarpur
- Adarsh Nagar
- Jahangirpuri
- Azadpur
- Bawana
- Rohini
- Seemapuri
- Trilokpuri
- Shahdara
- Karawal Nagar
- Sangam Vihar
- Dwarka
- Najafgarh
These areas will see early execution of infrastructure upgrades under the DUSIB-led initiative.
Expansion of Atal Canteens for Affordable Meals
As part of the welfare initiative, the government is also expanding Atal Canteens across multiple assembly constituencies. These canteens will provide affordable and nutritious meals to economically weaker families living in JJ colonies and nearby areas.
The expansion is intended to support food security and improve access to basic nutrition for low-income households.
Government’s Vision for Inclusive Urban Development
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the objective of the plan goes beyond infrastructure development. The government aims to make JJ colonies:
- Cleaner and more hygienic
- Safer for residents
- Better connected with civic services
- More livable with improved public facilities
She emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that residents of JJ colonies receive the same quality of basic amenities as other citizens of the capital.
Long-Term Impact of the Initiative
Officials said the DUSIB will continue to accelerate sanitation, safety, and welfare-related projects in the coming years. The ₹441.1 crore investment is expected to significantly improve living standards and promote inclusive urban development across Delhi’s JJ settlements.
