New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has unveiled an ambitious redevelopment project to restore and transform the historic Yamuna Bazaar stretch in Delhi. The initiative aims to revive the cultural and heritage significance of the Yamuna riverfront by redeveloping 32 historic ghats between Wazirabad and the Old Railway Bridge, turning the area into a major public and tourist destination.
Revival of Yamuna’s Historic Riverfront
The project is designed to restore Delhi’s centuries-old connection with the Yamuna River. Officials said that once demolition work is completed, the ghats will be redeveloped to reflect their historical importance while improving public accessibility.
According to records, the area once served as a vibrant cultural and religious hub, similar to the well-known Kudsia Ghat. However, over time, encroachments and unauthorized construction restricted public access to the riverbank.
Historical Records Dating Back to 1904 Used as Reference
The redevelopment plan is being guided by historical revenue records from 1904–05, which clearly mention the existence of these ghats and nearby temples. These archival documents are being used as a reference point to restore the original layout and cultural identity of the area.
Officials noted that most of the land is government-owned, making it suitable for large-scale restoration and public redevelopment.
Collaboration with INTACH for Heritage Restoration
The DDA had partnered with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) as early as 2019 to develop a structured restoration framework for the site.
INTACH had previously contributed to the development of Vasudev Ghat, and the same heritage-sensitive approach will now be extended to the Yamuna Bazaar ghats.
A detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been prepared for the 66-hectare project area to ensure environmental safety and structured flood management.
Flood-Resilient and Environment-Friendly Design
A key feature of the project is its flood management strategy. The SOP includes:
- Immediate evacuation protocols during floods
- Rapid cleaning and restoration after water recedes
- Environmentally sustainable riverfront management
These measures are aimed at making the riverfront both safe and ecologically balanced.
Key Features of the Redeveloped Riverfront
The proposed Yamuna riverfront redevelopment will include modern and eco-friendly public amenities such as:
- A 3-meter-wide continuous pedestrian walkway along the river
- A 1.5-hectare green zone with medicinal and traditional plants
- Restored heritage retaining walls and stepped ghats
- Universal access ramps for accessibility
- Dedicated seating areas and cultural art installations
- Organized parking facilities for visitors
The design focuses on blending heritage conservation with modern urban infrastructure.
Boost to Tourism and Cultural Identity of Old Delhi
Officials believe the project will significantly enhance tourism in Old Delhi and restore the Yamuna’s historical identity. Once completed, the redeveloped ghats are expected to emerge as a major cultural hub, attracting both domestic and international tourists.
The initiative also aims to improve public access to the river and promote environmentally responsible urban development along the Yamuna corridor.
The DDA’s Yamuna Bazaar redevelopment project marks a major step toward reviving Delhi’s lost riverfront heritage. By combining historical restoration with modern infrastructure, the initiative is expected to transform the 32 ghats into a vibrant cultural and public space while restoring the Yamuna’s long-standing historical significance.
