Harivansh Leads India at Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, Holds Talks With South African Leaders

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is leading an Indian parliamentary delegation at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town from September 12 to 19, 2026.

New Delhi: An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is participating in the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) being held in Cape Town, South Africa, from September 12 to 19, 2026.

The delegation includes MPs from both Houses of Parliament and P. C. Mody, Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha.

Indian Delegation Holds Talks With South African Parliamentarians

After arriving in Cape Town, Harivansh held bilateral meetings with senior members of the South African Parliament.

The meetings included:

  • Angela Thokozile Didiza, Speaker of the National Assembly
  • Poobalan Govender, Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces
  • Annelie Lotriet, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly

The discussions covered matters of mutual parliamentary interest and parliamentary relations between India and South Africa.

India Participates in Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Deliberations

Dr D. Purandeswari, Lok Sabha MP, participated in the meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee, where she presented India’s views on matters concerning the association.

The conference is also being attended by 32 Presiding Officers and 18 Secretaries from State and Union Territory legislatures in India, who are members of the CPA.

Six Workshops to Address Contemporary Parliamentary Issues

The 69th CPC includes six main workshops covering contemporary issues relevant to Commonwealth legislatures.

Harivansh is scheduled to address the conference’s General Assembly on the theme:

“New Leadership Opportunities for the Commonwealth: Parliamentary Action to Strengthen Democracy and International Law.”

Members of the Indian delegation, along with representatives from State and UT legislatures, will participate in workshops, plenary sessions and General Assembly deliberations.

India-South Africa Parliamentary Engagement

India’s participation includes bilateral engagements with South African parliamentary leaders as well as discussions within Commonwealth parliamentary forums.

The delegation will continue participating in the conference’s General Assembly, workshops and plenary deliberations through September 19.
