Andhra Pradesh: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has successfully commissioned a major transmission scheme supporting 3,500 MW of solar energy capacity in Andhra Pradesh. The project strengthens renewable energy evacuation infrastructure from key solar zones in Ananthapur and Kurnool, marking a significant step in India’s clean energy expansion.
The commissioning became effective on June 24, 2026, with the Notification for Commercial Operation (DOCO) received on June 26, 2026.
Solar Transmission Project Supports 3,500 MW Capacity
The newly commissioned transmission system is designed to evacuate solar power from two major renewable energy zones:
- Ananthapur (Ananthapuram): 2,500 MW
- Kurnool: 1,000 MW
- Total Capacity: 3,500 MW
This infrastructure will ensure efficient transfer of solar power generated from these regions to the national grid, reducing transmission bottlenecks and supporting large-scale renewable integration.
Key Milestone in India’s Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The project is expected to significantly enhance the power transmission network in Andhra Pradesh and support India’s broader clean energy goals. By improving evacuation capacity, the scheme will help reduce curtailment of solar energy and improve grid stability.
Officials said the transmission system will play a crucial role in strengthening renewable energy corridors and enabling faster deployment of solar parks in the region.
Corporate Restructuring and Project Ownership
The transmission scheme was initially assigned to POWERGRID Ananthpuram Kurnool Transmission Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of POWERGRID.
However, following a restructuring approved by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA):
- The subsidiary was merged with POWERGRID Khawda II-C Transmission Limited
- The merger became effective from March 1, 2026
- The consolidation streamlined project ownership before commissioning
This restructuring helped integrate assets under a unified transmission framework.
Regulatory Compliance and Disclosure
POWERGRID confirmed that the commissioning was disclosed in accordance with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
The company also reported that the DOCO was issued on June 25, 2026, and formally received via email on June 26, 2026.
Strengthening India’s Solar Power Growth
The commissioning of the 3,500 MW transmission scheme is a key milestone in supporting India’s rapidly expanding solar energy sector. It is expected to:
- Improve renewable energy evacuation efficiency
- Strengthen interstate transmission infrastructure
- Support integration of large-scale solar parks
- Enhance grid reliability and stability
