New Delhi: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is strengthening India’s freight transportation infrastructure through the development of a dedicated, high-capacity rail network connecting industrial hubs, logistics terminals, ports and major markets across the country.
The Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) are designed to enable faster, more efficient and sustainable movement of freight, supporting the growing requirements of India’s manufacturing, trade and logistics sectors.
Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors
DFCCIL’s network vision includes two major freight corridors that together form a strong backbone for India’s freight transportation system:
- Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC): Approximately 1,337 km, connecting New Sahnewal to New Sonnagar.
- Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC): Approximately 1,506 km, connecting New Dadri to New Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPI).
These corridors are designed to improve connectivity between key production centres, logistics hubs and gateway ports.
Dedicated Freight Corridors to Improve Freight Efficiency
The dedicated rail network is expected to help reduce transit times, improve supply chain reliability and enhance the overall efficiency of freight transportation. By providing dedicated infrastructure for freight movement, DFCCIL aims to enable smoother and more efficient transportation of goods across major industrial and commercial routes.
The improved connectivity between freight origins, consumption centres and ports is also expected to strengthen India’s logistics ecosystem.
Rail Freight to Support Sustainable Logistics
The Dedicated Freight Corridors are also aligned with India’s broader objective of developing a cleaner and more sustainable logistics ecosystem.
By shifting a greater share of cargo movement towards rail, the corridors can support more efficient freight transportation while strengthening the role of railways in the country’s logistics network.
