New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched an integrated hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista area, marking a significant step toward sustainable and clean public transportation in the national capital.
The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), with technical and fuel support from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).
Two Hydrogen Buses Begin Operations from Central Secretariat
The inaugural passenger service was flagged off from Central Secretariat Metro Station at 8:30 AM, with two hydrogen-powered shuttle buses deployed for operations in the Central Vista zone.
During the launch ceremony, ceremonial keys of the buses were handed over to DMRC Director (Operations and Services) Dr. Amit Kumar Jain by Arvind Kumar, Director (Refineries), IOCL, in the presence of senior officials from DMRC and IOCL.

Major Step Toward Green and Sustainable Urban Transport
Officials said the hydrogen bus project is part of India’s broader mission to promote clean energy and reduce carbon emissions in urban transport systems.
Hydrogen fuel cell buses offer several environmental and operational benefits, including:
- Zero tailpipe emissions (only water vapour released)
- Longer operational range compared to battery electric buses
- Faster refuelling for efficient city operations
The pilot project in the Central Vista area will help generate real-world data for future expansion of hydrogen-based mobility across Indian cities.
Strong Push for Clean Energy Collaboration
The project highlights strong inter-ministerial cooperation between MoHUA, MoPNG, DMRC, and IOCL, focusing on innovation in public transport and green energy adoption. Officials emphasized that hydrogen mobility could become a key pillar in India’s future urban transport ecosystem.
