Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has approved ₹330 crore for the construction, repair, and infrastructure development of 108 government secondary and higher secondary schools for the financial year 2026–27.
The decision aims to strengthen school infrastructure and improve access to quality education across both tribal and non-tribal regions of the state.
Funds Allocated for New School Buildings and Repairs
According to the Education Department, the funds have been distributed for multiple infrastructure needs, including new school buildings, compound walls, and repair works under government schemes and the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).
The allocation includes:
- ₹177 crore for construction of 69 schools in non-tribal areas
- ₹23 crore for compound walls in 76 schools
- ₹10 crore for repair works in 14 schools
Special Focus on Tribal Areas and Rural Education
For tribal regions, the government has approved:
- ₹44 crore for 17 new school buildings
- ₹31.68 crore for compound walls in 32 schools
- ₹4.32 crore for repair works in 6 schools
Additionally, ₹40 crore has been sanctioned under a special component scheme for constructing 22 schools in focused development areas.
Schools to Get Own Buildings After Years of Temporary Arrangements
Officials said that 108 schools currently functioning from primary school buildings or other temporary facilities will soon have dedicated infrastructure.
Construction is expected to be completed within one year, after which schools will shift to their new premises.
Among these, 69 schools are in non-tribal areas, including 14 in Ahmedabad district.
Ahmedabad and Other Districts to Benefit
Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, and Kutch are among the key districts benefiting from the project.
In Ahmedabad alone:
- 22 schools were operating from alternative buildings
- Land has been allotted for 15 schools
- Construction has been approved for 14 schools
- Total allocation: ₹44.80 crore
Infrastructure Push in Tribal and Special Focus Areas
The government has also prioritized infrastructure development worth:
- ₹99.2 crore in tribal areas
- ₹70.4 crore in special focus regions
An average cost of ₹3.2 crore per school has been approved for selected projects.
Strict Quality and Safety Guidelines for Construction
Officials confirmed that all construction work must follow Public Works Department (PWD) standards and safety norms set by the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). Projects must be completed within the stipulated timeline, failing which approvals may be withdrawn.
The ₹330 crore investment marks a significant step toward strengthening Gujarat’s school education infrastructure. With new buildings, improved facilities, and strict quality standards, the initiative aims to enhance learning environments and ensure long-term educational development across the state.
