New Delhi: India’s Gaganyaan Mission has entered an advanced stage as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has completed or nearly completed several critical technologies, launch systems, and mission infrastructure needed for the country’s first human spaceflight programme.

The update was shared by the Government of India in Parliament through a written reply by Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh. According to the government, preparations for the first uncrewed Gaganyaan (G1) mission are progressing steadily while testing and final integration work continue.

What Is the Gaganyaan Mission

Gaganyaan is India’s first human spaceflight programme. The mission aims to send Indian astronauts, called Gaganyatris, into low-Earth orbit and bring them back safely.

Before the crewed mission, ISRO will conduct uncrewed test flights to verify the spacecraft, launch vehicle, and astronaut safety systems.

Gaganyaan Mission Update: Human-Rated Launch Vehicle Ready

The Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3), specially designed to safely carry astronauts into space, has completed development and ground testing of all its propulsion stages and structural systems.

This rocket is one of the most important parts of the Gaganyaan programme because it must meet much stricter safety standards than regular satellite launch vehicles.

Orbital Module Development Nears Completion

ISRO has also made major progress on the Orbital Module, which includes:

Crew Module

The Crew Module is where astronauts will stay during the mission. Several important systems have been successfully developed and tested, including:

  • Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS)
  • Thermal Protection System
  • Deceleration system
  • Crew Module Uprighting System
  • End-to-end avionics

These systems are essential for keeping astronauts safe during launch, spaceflight, re-entry, and landing.

Service Module

The Service Module provides propulsion, power, and mission support to the spacecraft. According to the government, its propulsion systems have already been developed, tested, and qualified for future missions.

Gaganyaan Mission: Crew Escape System Achieves Major Milestone

The Crew Escape System (CES), designed to quickly move astronauts away from the rocket during an emergency, has also reached an advanced stage. ISRO has successfully developed and static-tested all five types of escape motors, while the required structures have also been completed and qualified.

Gaganyaan Mission: Mission Infrastructure Is Ready

The government informed Parliament that several mission facilities have already been established, including:

  • Orbital Module Preparation Facility
  • Gaganyaan Control Centre
  • Gaganyaan Control Facility
  • Crew Training Facility
  • Upgraded Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC SHAR)

The launch pad now includes a Crew Access Arm, Bubble Lift, upgraded checkout facilities, and a zip-line emergency evacuation system for astronauts.

Successful Test Campaigns Strengthen Gaganyaan Mission Readiness

ISRO has completed several important test campaigns for Gaganyaan. The successful TV-D1 Test Vehicle Mission validated the Crew Escape System during flight.

The agency also completed Integrated Air Drop Tests (IADT-01 and IADT-02) to verify the Crew Module’s parachute-based deceleration system. Preparations for the next TV-D2 mission are now at an advanced stage.

Astronaut Training Continues

India’s selected astronauts, known as Gaganyatris, have completed their generic astronaut training at Glavkosmos in Russia. Mission-specific training is currently underway at the Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru, where they are preparing for India’s first human spaceflight mission.

First Uncrewed G1 Mission Preparation

For the upcoming G1 mission:

  • All propulsion stages of the HLVM3 are ready.
  • Crew Escape System motors are prepared.
  • Crew Module and Service Module systems have been developed.
  • Assembly, integration, and testing are nearing completion.
  • Integrated mission simulations are also being carried out.

These activities will help verify every major system before astronauts fly into space.
