NEW DELHI: GAIL (India) Limited has won the Midstream Project of the Year – India award at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2026 for its execution of the Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Pipeline Project. The cross-country natural gas pipeline is a major infrastructure initiative under India’s National Gas Grid programme, aimed at strengthening gas transportation and supporting the country’s transition towards a gas-based economy.

Spanning four states—Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha—the pipeline connects western and eastern gas sources through bidirectional gas flow. It forms an important longitudinal axis of the national gas network, improving connectivity between different gas supply regions.

The recognition highlights GAIL’s project execution capabilities, engineering solutions and coordination efforts in delivering critical energy infrastructure across challenging geographical and regulatory environments.

GAIL’s Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Pipeline Strengthens National Gas Grid

The Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Pipeline Project is designed to strengthen India’s natural gas transportation infrastructure by connecting gas sources across the western and eastern regions.

As part of the National Gas Grid initiative, the pipeline supports the development of an integrated gas network capable of transporting natural gas in both directions. This connectivity can improve the flexibility of gas movement between supply regions and consuming markets.

The project also supports India’s broader efforts to expand natural gas infrastructure for households, transport, commercial establishments and industries.

GAIL Overcomes Complex Terrain and Land Acquisition Challenges

The pipeline project involved significant engineering and implementation challenges due to the diverse terrain and multiple infrastructure constraints along its route.

The pipeline passed through hilly regions, forest areas, wildlife corridors and heavily constrained utility zones. Its execution also required coordination among multiple agencies, management of land-related restrictions and the handling of thousands of physical crossings.

To address these challenges, GAIL implemented three distinct Right of User (RoU) acquisition mechanisms. These included laying major sections of the pipeline within the utility corridor of an under-construction expressway, along national highways and through statutory land acquisition.

The use of these different approaches helped the company navigate land availability issues and infrastructure restrictions while progressing with construction.

Strategic engineering solutions and active stakeholder engagement played an important role in managing the project’s complex requirements and ensuring its completion.

Safety Remained a Key Priority During Project Execution

Despite the challenging construction environment, GAIL maintained a strong focus on safety throughout the pipeline’s execution.

The project involved work across difficult landscapes and areas with multiple physical and infrastructure constraints. Safety considerations remained central to construction activities, with the project recording millions of safe man-hours.

The achievement reflects the importance of safety management, coordinated execution and effective planning in delivering large-scale natural gas infrastructure projects.

Pipeline to Support India’s Transition Towards a Gas-Based Economy

The Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Pipeline is expected to contribute to the expansion of natural gas availability across several regions.

By strengthening the National Gas Grid, the project supports the wider distribution of natural gas for piped natural gas (PNG) connections to millions of households and fuel supply to thousands of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across dozens of districts.

Natural gas infrastructure can support cleaner energy use in households, transport and industrial activities. Wider access to gas can also contribute to lower emissions compared with more carbon-intensive fuels in suitable applications, while supporting industrial development and energy diversification.

The pipeline’s connectivity between western and eastern gas sources is therefore an important element in strengthening the country’s energy transportation network.

Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2026 Recognise Industry Excellence

The Asian Oil & Gas Awards recognise organisations delivering excellence and measurable impact across the oil and gas value chain.

The awards highlight companies that demonstrate successful strategies, adapt to changing industry conditions, promote digital transformation and overcome operational challenges in a demanding business environment.

GAIL’s recognition in the Midstream Project of the Year – India category acknowledges its work on a major natural gas transportation project and its contribution to strengthening India’s gas infrastructure.
