New Delhi: NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has set an ambitious target to expand its renewable energy capacity to 60 gigawatts (GW) by 2032, from its current installed capacity of around 12 GW. The expansion forms a key part of the broader growth strategy of its parent company, NTPC Limited, which is working towards an overall installed capacity of 149 GW.
The expansion plan includes renewable energy projects, brownfield thermal power additions and an entry into nuclear power generation, alongside NTPC’s existing power generation portfolio of approximately 91 GW.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, P. Rahul, Deputy General Manager, Business Development – Green Hydrogen, NTPC Green Energy Limited, outlined the company’s renewable energy expansion roadmap and ongoing clean energy initiatives.
He said that NGEL currently has around 12 GW of renewable energy capacity and is targeting approximately 60 GW by 2032. He added that renewable energy expansion, thermal power projects and nuclear generation would collectively contribute towards NTPC’s overall target of 149 GW.
NTPC Green Energy Plans 60 GW Renewable Capacity by 2032
NTPC Green Energy’s renewable energy expansion is expected to play a significant role in India’s clean energy transition.
The company aims to increase its renewable energy portfolio fivefold over the coming years, from approximately 12 GW to 60 GW by 2032. The expansion is part of NTPC Limited’s wider power generation strategy, which includes the development of brownfield thermal power projects and exploration of nuclear energy.
According to P. Rahul, NTPC is also conducting feasibility studies for potential nuclear power projects at various locations across India.
He clarified that the assessments are currently at a preliminary stage and that no specific location has been finalised for the proposed nuclear projects. The company will be able to identify suitable locations after completing the feasibility studies.

NTPC Showcases Green Hydrogen Hub and CO2 Battery Technology
At the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, NTPC showcased two major clean energy initiatives alongside a model of a hydrogen-powered locomotive.
These initiatives include a green hydrogen hub focused on producing green chemicals for domestic and international markets and an innovative CO2 battery-based energy storage solution. P. Rahul explained that the proposed green hydrogen hub would focus on producing green chemicals on a large scale, with the objective of supplying export markets such as Japan, Singapore and Europe.
The company also showcased its CO2 battery technology, an innovative energy storage solution that does not depend on critical minerals commonly used in lithium-ion batteries and several other battery storage systems.
The technology is being highlighted as an alternative approach to energy storage, particularly as the demand for reliable storage solutions increases alongside renewable energy capacity.
Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub to Produce 1.5 Million Tonnes of Green Ammonia
One of the major projects highlighted by NTPC is its proposed green hydrogen hub at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
According to P. Rahul, the foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and execution activities have now started on the ground.
The proposed hub will have a significant green chemical production capacity, with the following targets:
- Green Ammonia: Approximately 1.5 million tonnes.
- Green Methanol: Approximately 0.5 million tonnes.
- Green Urea and ESAF Combined: Approximately 0.5 million tonnes.
The project is expected to require around 15–16 GW of renewable energy to meet its power requirements.
The green hydrogen hub is designed to support the production and export of green chemicals, strengthening India’s position in the emerging global green energy and hydrogen economy.
Visakhapatnam Hub Gets In-Principle SEZ Clearance
The proposed green hydrogen hub at Visakhapatnam has received in-principle clearance from the Andhra Pradesh government for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) designation.
The proposed SEZ status is expected to support the project’s export competitiveness and facilitate access to international markets, particularly across Asia-Pacific and European regions.
The development is significant for India’s ambition to emerge as a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen and green chemicals.
NTPC Expands Green Hydrogen Projects Across India
Apart from the large-scale green hydrogen hub at Visakhapatnam, NTPC is also expanding its domestic green hydrogen activities through projects at multiple locations.
The company’s green hydrogen initiatives include projects in:
- Leh, Ladakh
- Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh
- Surat Kawas, Gujarat
- Madhya Pradesh
These projects form part of NTPC’s broader strategy to develop green hydrogen production capabilities and explore its applications across different sectors.
Through its renewable energy expansion, green hydrogen initiatives and alternative energy storage technologies, NTPC is working to diversify its energy portfolio and strengthen India’s clean energy infrastructure.
NTPC’s Long-Term Power Generation Expansion Strategy
NTPC Limited is targeting an overall installed power generation capacity of 149 GW as part of its long-term expansion strategy.
The plan combines renewable energy capacity additions through NTPC Green Energy, brownfield thermal power projects and the development of nuclear energy capabilities.
The renewable energy target of 60 GW by 2032 represents a major component of this strategy. Alongside electricity generation, the company’s investments in green hydrogen, green ammonia, methanol and energy storage are expected to support the development of a broader clean energy ecosystem.
