New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company, is planning to add 58 gigawatts (GW) of installed power generation capacity to reach a total of 149 GW by 2032. NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh shared the company’s expansion plans while addressing the KPMG ENRich 2026 event in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The planned capacity addition will include power projects based on different energy sources, including renewable energy. Singh also highlighted NTPC’s growing focus on the nuclear power sector as part of its long-term strategy to expand India’s energy generation capacity.

Currently, NTPC has an installed power generation capacity of around 91 GW. With the proposed addition of 58 GW, the company aims to increase its total capacity to 149 GW by 2032.

NTPC Targets 149 GW Installed Capacity by 2032

Addressing the KPMG ENRich 2026 event, Singh said NTPC has a clear direction for its future capacity expansion and is moving ahead with plans to add generation capacity across different energy sources.

The company is focusing on expanding its power generation portfolio to meet India’s growing electricity demand while diversifying its energy mix.

The proposed capacity addition of 58 GW will take NTPC’s installed capacity from the current 91 GW to 149 GW by 2032. The expansion is expected to include renewable energy and other sources of power generation.

NTPC Accelerates Nuclear Power Expansion Plans

Highlighting the company’s plans for the nuclear energy sector, Singh said NTPC is moving faster towards adding nuclear power generation capacity.

He also referred to the broader nuclear energy expansion target of 250 GW by 2037, under which around 30 GW of nuclear capacity is planned, as outlined in his remarks.

NTPC has already completed feasibility studies for proposed nuclear power capacities in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha. According to sources, the company will also explore additional locations in other states for future nuclear projects.

The focus on nuclear energy forms part of NTPC’s strategy to diversify its generation portfolio and contribute to India’s long-term power requirements.

India’s Power Sector Shows Resilience Amid Global Challenges

Speaking about the domestic power sector, Singh said India’s electricity sector has demonstrated resilience despite ongoing global challenges and volatility in energy markets.

He observed that India has not experienced the same level of energy price increases seen in several other parts of the world.

According to Singh, the country’s power sector has remained relatively stable despite global turmoil, reflecting the resilience of India’s energy supply system.

India’s Power Demand Rises 21% in October

Singh also highlighted the continued increase in electricity demand in the country. He said power demand recorded a 21% year-on-year increase in October this year and has been rising every month.

The growth in electricity consumption underlines the need for additional generation capacity to support India’s expanding energy requirements.

NTPC’s planned capacity expansion, including investments in renewable and nuclear power, is aimed at supporting the country’s future electricity demand.
