Kolkata: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has commissioned the indigenously designed and built Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS Ajit (Yard 1277), marking another milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen maritime security and achieve self-reliance in defence shipbuilding.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard, the Indian Navy and Goa Shipyard Limited. The newly commissioned vessel is expected to strengthen the Indian Coast Guard’s operational capabilities in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and enhancing coastal security.
The commissioning reinforces the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India initiative by highlighting the role of indigenous shipbuilding in developing the country’s maritime defence capabilities.
Goa Shipyard Limited Commissions ICGS Ajit (Yard 1277)
Goa Shipyard Limited formally commissioned ICGS Ajit, identified as Yard 1277, for the Indian Coast Guard. The vessel has been indigenously designed and built by GSL, demonstrating the shipyard’s contribution to India’s domestic defence manufacturing and maritime infrastructure. The commissioning represents a significant development in the Indian Coast Guard’s efforts to strengthen its fleet and improve its ability to protect the nation’s maritime interests.
Senior Officials Attend ICGS Ajit Commissioning Ceremony
The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior representatives from the Indian Coast Guard, the Indian Navy and Goa Shipyard Limited.
Dr Sirish Choudhary, IDAS, Principal Integrated Financial Advisor (Indian Coast Guard), attended the event as the chief guest.
Other dignitaries present at the ceremony included:

- Rear Admiral Nelson A. J. D’Souza, NM, IN (Retd.) – Director (Operations), Goa Shipyard Limited

The presence of senior officials from the participating organisations highlighted the importance of the commissioning in strengthening cooperation and supporting India’s maritime security objectives.
Indigenous Shipbuilding to Strengthen India’s Coastal Security
Indigenously designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Ajit is intended to enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s operational capabilities in protecting India’s maritime interests and improving coastal security.
The vessel’s commissioning reflects India’s continued focus on strengthening its maritime infrastructure through domestically developed and manufactured platforms.
A strong indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem is an important component of India’s broader efforts to improve defence preparedness, reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and build domestic capabilities in the maritime sector.

The commissioning of ICGS Ajit aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and the Make in India initiative, both of which promote domestic manufacturing and indigenous technological capabilities.
