Calcutta High Court on Thursday afternoon has ordered CBI to probe serious murders, sexual assault on women, and rape allegations soon after the overwhelming victory of the West Bengal assembly election.
The Calcutta High Court has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the other allegations in the state, which include incapacitation, arson, vandalism, loot, threats, and property damage. The investigation will be monitored by the court.
The SIT will comprise three IPS officers from West Bengal Cadre – Ranvir Kumar, Suman Bala Sahoo, and Soumet Mitra. CBI and SIT have been instructed to submit their reports within six weeks.
The court has said, a retired judge of the Supreme Court will oversee the SIT’s work, for which a separate order will get passed later. The state has been ordered to hand over all the files and documents to the assigned investigating agencies. The High Court added, in case the state is not acting properly, it will be viewed seriously.
The Calcutta HC had earlier in-charged National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to carry out the probe.
