The shipment is another important achievement for India’s horticulture export sector. It also shows the growing global demand for premium fruits grown in Kashmir.

The export was officially flagged off on 16 July 2026 in collaboration with M/s Osum Food Solutions LLP and M/s Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, Pulwama.

The fruits were sourced from Shopian and Pulwama, two districts famous for producing high-quality temperate fruits.

What Is APEDA

APEDA stands for the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. It works under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and helps Indian farmers and exporters sell agricultural products in international markets.

Its main goal is to increase India’s agricultural exports and improve farmers’ earnings.

What Are Areko Cherries

Areko Cherries are premium European Sweet Cherries grown using high-density farming methods. These cherries are known for:

  • Sweet taste
  • Large size
  • Bright colour
  • Long shelf life
  • Premium export quality

Because of these qualities, they are popular in international markets.

What Are Scentrose Plums

Scentrose Plums are premium-quality plums known for their:

  • Excellent sweetness
  • Rich flavour
  • Attractive colour
  • Better freshness
  • High export value

These fruits are suitable for long-distance exports because they remain fresh for a longer time.

How Were the Fruits Prepared for Export

APEDA ensured that the fruits met international quality standards before export. The fruits were:

  • Harvested at the right maturity stage.
  • Scientifically sorted and graded.
  • Carefully packed.
  • Transported through a modern cold chain.
  • Exported under international food safety and phytosanitary standards.

These steps helped maintain freshness and quality until the fruits reached Singapore.

Why Is Jammu Kashmir Areko Cherries and Scentrose Plums Export Important

This first export is important because it opens a new international market for premium fruits from Jammu & Kashmir. It also strengthens India’s position as a reliable exporter of fresh fruits.

The success follows recent exports of fresh cherries and plums from Kashmir to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, showing strong international demand.

How Will Farmers Benefit?

According to APEDA, farmers are expected to earn more than 50% higher returns compared to selling through traditional markets. The initiative will also encourage growers to:

  • Follow scientific farming methods.
  • Produce export-quality fruits.
  • Reduce post-harvest losses.
  • Improve fruit quality.
  • Increase long-term income.
  • Connect with international buyers.

Why Is Singapore a Good Market?

Singapore imports premium fruits from many countries because consumers prefer fresh, high-quality produce. The successful shipment creates new business opportunities for Indian exporters and helps Kashmir’s fruits reach more global customers.

APEDA’s Long-Term Vision

APEDA continues to expand India’s agricultural exports by:

  • Finding new international markets.
  • Supporting exporters.
  • Improving logistics.
  • Promoting better packaging.
  • Connecting Indian farmers with global buyers.

These efforts help increase farmers’ income and strengthen India’s export industry.

What This Means for Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu & Kashmir is already famous for producing premium apples, cherries, plums and other temperate fruits. This first export to Singapore further improves the region’s reputation as a trusted supplier of high-quality fresh fruits. It also encourages more farmers to focus on export-quality production.

Key Takeaways

  • APEDA completed the first export of Areko Cherries and Scentrose Plums to Singapore.
  • Fruits were sourced from Shopian and Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Farmers may earn over 50% higher returns.
  • The export followed international food safety standards.
