New Delhi: The Union Budget 2026 has laid out a strong roadmap for enhancing assistive technology for persons with disabilities and senior citizens, with special support earmarked for the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO).

This major fiscal plan focuses on scaling up the production of high-quality assistive devices, strengthening research and development, and integrating advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve accessibility and quality of life for millions of beneficiaries.

Union Budget 2026: Government Puts Assistive Technology

In the Budget speech presented on 1 February 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and empowerment of Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens.

As part of the Divyang Sahara Yojana, ALIMCO has been entrusted with a central role in expanding access to assistive solutions across India.

This initiative aligns with the broader vision of building a “Viksit Bharat”, where technology-enabled solutions ensure dignity, independence, and participation for all citizens, especially the differently-abled.

What ALIMCO Will Focus On Under the Union Budget 2026

Under the new Budget, ALIMCO will receive targeted support to scale up production of high-quality assistive aids. These include mobility devices, low-vision and low-hearing aids, smart hearing solutions, e-Braille readers, and cognitive assistive tools tailored to diverse needs.

Increasing domestic production is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imports while ensuring affordable and reliable technology for beneficiaries across regions.

Deepen Research and Development Initiatives

A significant Budget provision highlights funding for enhanced research and development (R&D) in assistive technology. This includes leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for improved product design, customised user experiences, and smarter assistive solutions.

By integrating advanced STEM innovations, ALIMCO aims to become a national hub for assistive technology innovation, empowering startups, MSMEs, and research institutions to contribute to this growing sector.

Enhancing Accessibility Through Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Vayoshri Kendras

Another key Budget measure is the expansion and strengthening of Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Vayoshri Kendras (PMDVKs), already operating at around 100 centres nationwide.

These centres will be modernised and connected with Assistive Technology Marts — retail-style facilities where persons with disabilities and senior citizens can:

  • See and test devices in person
  • Make informed choices with professional guidance
  • Access services with dignity and convenience

This last-mile delivery model is expected to bridge gaps between technology providers and end users, especially in underserved areas.

Complementary Budget Schemes: Divyang Kaushal Yojana

Alongside Divyang Sahara Yojana, the Divyang Kaushal Yojana was also announced in the Budget. This initiative aims to promote skills and employment opportunities tailored to persons with disabilities. It will blend industry-relevant training with assistive tech use to support meaningful livelihoods.

Official Government Vision: A More Inclusive India

According to the reports, the Budget allocation for ALIMCO is part of a broader strategy led by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

This strategy prioritises:

  • Inclusive access to modern assistive solutions
  • Technology-driven services nationwide
  • Integration of AI and R&D for better device outcomes
  • Stronger linkage between government, industry, and civil society

The government’s approach reflects a holistic empowerment framework that recognises Divyangjan and senior citizens as essential stakeholders in India’s social and economic growth.

Impact and Future Opportunities

Experts say that enhancing production and R&D in assistive technologies will not only benefit end users but also strengthen India’s global competitiveness in this specialised manufacturing sector. Increased innovation can attract investment, create jobs, and support related industries such as healthcare, rehabilitation services, and technology startups.

With this Budget push, ALIMCO is positioned to be more than a manufacturing entity — it could become a centre of excellence for assistive solutions in South Asia and beyond.

What is ALIMCO

Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) is a Government of India public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

It designs, manufactures, and supplies high-quality assistive devices for persons with disabilities and senior citizens across the country.

ALIMCO focuses on affordability, accessibility, and innovation to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life.

Conclusion: A Transformative Step in Assistive Technology

The Union Budget 2026–27 marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards accessible and inclusive development. By empowering ALIMCO through expanded production, R&D, AI integration, and stronger distribution networks, the government has taken a decisive step to enhance quality of life for Divyangjan and senior citizens nationwide.
