Kolkata/Chennai: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, has achieved another significant milestone in indigenous warship construction by delivering ‘Amini’, the fifth of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) being built for the Indian Navy.

The warship was formally delivered and accepted by Rear Admiral Gautam Marwaha, VSM, CSO (Tech), Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

With this delivery, GRSE has completed the construction of its 119th warship and delivered its 81st warship to the Indian Navy. The achievement further strengthens the shipyard’s contribution to India’s naval modernisation and maritime security.

GRSE Delivers Fifth ASW-SWC Amini to Indian Navy

The delivery of Amini marks another important step in GRSE’s ongoing warship-building programme for the Indian Navy. The vessel is the fifth of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft being constructed by the shipyard.

Earlier, on March 30, 2026, GRSE achieved a major milestone by delivering three frontline naval platforms, Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray, to the Indian Navy on the same day.

This first-of-its-kind achievement highlighted the shipyard’s strong infrastructure, enhanced production capabilities and ability to execute multiple complex shipbuilding projects simultaneously.

The delivery of Amini further reinforces GRSE’s track record of executing and delivering critical naval platforms while maintaining its focus on timely project completion.

Amini Equipped for Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations

Designed specifically for operations in coastal waters, Amini is equipped to undertake sub-surface surveillance, search and attack missions, and coordinated anti-submarine warfare operations in conjunction with aircraft.

The warship features an advanced Combat Management System, lightweight torpedoes and anti-submarine warfare rockets. These systems enable it to detect, track and engage underwater threats, strengthening the Indian Navy’s ability to protect India’s maritime interests and coastal waters.

Its specialised design and advanced equipment make it suitable for littoral operations, particularly in areas where conventional larger naval platforms may face operational limitations.

Key Specifications and Capabilities of GRSE’s Amini Warship

Amini has been designed with specialised features to support operations in shallow and coastal waters.

The major technical specifications of the warship include:

  • Length: Approximately 77.6 metres.
  • Draught: Approximately 2.7 metres.
  • Propulsion: Marine diesel engines coupled with waterjets.
  • Combat Management: Advanced Combat Management System.
  • Weapons: Lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine warfare rockets and a 30mm Naval Surface Gun.

The vessel’s waterjet propulsion system provides enhanced agility and manoeuvrability, making it suitable for operations in confined coastal environments.

Its shallow draught of approximately 2.7 metres allows it to operate effectively in littoral waters and access areas that may be challenging for larger naval platforms.

Amini Features 88% Indigenous Content, Supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat

In line with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Amini reflects GRSE’s strong emphasis on indigenous shipbuilding and the integration of domestic defence technologies.

The ASW-SWC programme incorporates approximately 88% indigenous content, highlighting the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The warship is also equipped with a 30mm Naval Surface Gun manufactured by GRSE, further demonstrating the shipyard’s contribution to developing and integrating indigenous defence equipment.

The high level of domestic content supports India’s efforts to reduce dependence on foreign defence imports while strengthening the country’s naval shipbuilding capabilities.

GRSE Building 13 Frontline Naval Platforms and 36 Other Vessels

GRSE continues to expand its shipbuilding activities with a substantial order book covering multiple categories of naval and commercial vessels.

The shipyard is currently constructing 13 frontline naval platforms for the Indian Navy, comprising:

  1. One Project 17A Advanced Stealth Frigate.
  2. Three Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).
  3. Four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels.
  4. Five Next Generation Corvettes.

In addition to these frontline naval platforms, GRSE is constructing 36 other vessels, including 13 export platforms.

The diversified order book reflects the shipyard’s growing production capabilities and its role in supporting India’s naval modernisation, maritime security and indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem.

With multiple naval and export projects under execution, GRSE continues to strengthen its position as an important contributor to India’s defence manufacturing sector.
