Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav on October 3 laid the foundation stone for the Advanced Technology and Research Innovation (ATRI) campus at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal, at Bhauri village.
The new campus, estimated to cost ₹485 crore, is expected to strengthen IISER Bhopal’s research infrastructure through a new campus, modern laboratories and an innovation park. The initiative comes as the state government continues to emphasise research and innovation as important drivers of development.
During the programme, Chief Minister Yadav also planted saplings on the campus and unveiled the newly installed statue of Swami Vivekananda.
New Campus to Strengthen Research Infrastructure
The ATRI campus is being developed as an advanced research and innovation facility at IISER Bhopal. The project includes modern laboratory infrastructure and an innovation park, creating additional space and facilities for scientific research.
Speaking at the event, CM Yadav said the Madhya Pradesh government is encouraging research and innovation across different fields. He linked the expansion of research infrastructure with the broader need to develop scientific capabilities in the country.
The ₹485-crore investment represents a major expansion of the institution’s physical and research facilities and is aimed at providing researchers with modern infrastructure.

CM Highlights Role of IISERs in Scientific Research
CM Yadav said seven IISER institutions are currently functioning in the country and described them as comparable to the “Saptarishis” of the present era because of their contribution to scientific research.
He also referred to India’s long tradition of knowledge and research. According to him, the country’s scientific institutions are carrying this tradition forward by combining knowledge with modern research and technology.
The Chief Minister said IISER Bhopal is contributing to this process through new areas of research and innovation.
Science, Technology and Innovation at the Centre
The Chief Minister also spoke about the connection between scientific research, technology and human welfare. He referred to biotechnology and other emerging areas where scientific investigation is expanding the understanding of life and the natural world.
He said research today brings together knowledge, scientific reasoning and technological applications. Such work, he noted, can contribute to solutions aimed at improving human life and addressing wider social challenges.
The new ATRI campus is expected to provide researchers with infrastructure to pursue such work while encouraging innovation within the institute.

Swami Vivekananda’s Statue Unveiled
The programme also featured the unveiling of a newly constructed statue of Swami Vivekananda on the IISER Bhopal campus.
CM Yadav recalled Vivekananda’s interest in science and his search for knowledge. He said Vivekananda’s life reflected a combination of curiosity, learning and the pursuit of deeper understanding.
The Chief Minister connected the occasion with the broader role of educational and research institutions in encouraging young people to pursue knowledge and scientific inquiry.
Research Linked to Human Welfare
CM Yadav said research should ultimately contribute to the welfare of society. He highlighted the importance of continuing scientific work while drawing upon India’s intellectual and cultural traditions.
He also referred to the relationship between nature and human life, citing the Sun as an important source of energy for life and plant photosynthesis. He said scientific research is increasingly exploring the processes that sustain life and the natural environment.
His remarks placed the new research campus within a wider vision of scientific development, where research and innovation can support human welfare.
Focus on a Growing Research Ecosystem
The development at IISER Bhopal comes at a time when research institutions are playing an increasingly important role in areas such as biotechnology, advanced technology and innovation.
Modern laboratories can provide researchers and students with better facilities for experimentation, while an innovation park can help create an environment where research ideas can move towards practical applications.
For students pursuing science and research, such infrastructure can also provide opportunities to work with advanced facilities and engage with emerging areas of scientific investigation.

MP’s Push for Research and Innovation
The Madhya Pradesh government has been highlighting research and innovation as part of its broader development agenda. The ATRI campus adds another major research infrastructure project to this effort.
The combination of a new campus, modern laboratories and an innovation park is expected to expand IISER Bhopal’s capacity for scientific activity. It also strengthens the role of the institute as a centre for science education and research in the state.
The foundation stone ceremony therefore marks more than the beginning of a construction project. It signals an effort to create additional infrastructure for researchers, students and innovation-driven scientific work.
As India continues to expand its research ecosystem, facilities such as the ATRI campus can contribute to developing scientific talent and supporting research that addresses technological, environmental and human-development challenges.
