BENGALURU: In a historic shift in global military power, India has overtaken China to become the world’s third most powerful air force, according to the latest rankings released by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA). This marks a major realignment in Asia’s strategic landscape, with India now trailing only behind the United States and Russia.

The report covers data from 103 nations and 129 air services, including air forces operated by armies, navies, and marine corps, tracking a total of 48,082 aircraft worldwide.

WDMMA Ranking: India Climbs to 3rd Place, China Slips to 4th

According to the TruVal Rating (TVR), which considers operational readiness, modernization, logistics, and training, the Indian Air Force (IAF) now holds a TVR of 69.4, while China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) stands at 58.1, placing it in the fourth position.

Despite China having a slightly larger fleet, the Indian Air Force scored higher in combat readiness and modernization, key factors that influenced its ranking.

The Top 5 Air Forces globally according to WDMMA:

  • United States Air Force – TVR: 242.9
  • United States Navy
  • Russia – TVR: 142.4
  • India – TVR: 69.4
  • China – TVR: 58.1

Breakdown of India’s Air Power

India’s air fleet consists of 1,716 aircraft, distributed as follows:

  • 31.6% Fighters (e.g., Su-30MKI, Rafale)
  • 29% Helicopters
  • 21.8% Trainers

The remainder includes transport and special mission aircraft.

This balanced distribution provides the Indian Air Force with a high degree of operational flexibility and combat-readiness across scenarios, from air superiority missions to humanitarian and disaster relief operations.

Modernization and Strategic Investments Fuel India’s Rise

India’s ranking reflects years of modernization, including:

  • Acquisition of Sukhoi Su-30MKI from Russia
  • Procurement of Dassault Rafale fighters from France
  • Strengthening of indigenous programs such as Tejas Light Combat Aircraft

Integration of helicopter gunships, transport aircraft, and UAVs for reconnaissance

These investments, along with a focus on pilot training, network-centric warfare, and multi-domain operations, have enhanced India’s ability to project power beyond its borders.

Operation Sindoor: A Showcase of Tactical Superiority

India’s air dominance was on display during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, a precision strike operation conducted in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack. The mission targeted terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The operation demonstrated the IAF’s capability to execute rapid, precise, and coordinated missions, reinforcing its strategic credibility.

Air Power’s Role in Geopolitical Shifts

Air dominance continues to be a decisive factor in global military strategy. The United States still leads, backed by nearly 40% of global military spending, but the rise of India reflects Asia’s evolving security dynamics.

According to Janes Defence, global defense spending is projected to rise by 3.6%, reaching $2.56 trillion by the end of 2025. This surge is driven by intensified conflicts, increasing threat perception, and a global arms modernization race.

Strategic Implications: India’s Growing Clout

India’s rise to the third spot on the WDMMA rankings is more than symbolic:

  • It signals a regional shift in military balance in Asia.
  • Positions India as a credible deterrent amid rising tensions with China.
  • Reinforces India’s status as a key defense player in global alliances like QUAD and Indo-Pacific strategy frameworks.

The Indian Air Force’s ability to combine modernization, agility, and doctrine-driven warfare continues to make it a formidable force on the world stage.
